It's the right move by the club and the only sides I could think of that would be interested in signing Long are ones without half backs or somewhere like Celtic. I'd be surprised if he was overwhelmed with offers but we have to give our kids more game time in preparation for next year, which I'm sure they'll get if they stay clear of injuries.

Sorry I don't agree. Long and goulding was both much better players than Edwards.

Yes, Edwards was then about 29, Long 20 (and had a bad injury) Goulding had been kicked out of Wigan and Leeds.

Long has been a great servant for Saints without a doubt, but would I swap him for Edwards, no, no a thousand times no.

Should Wigan have kept Long, quite possibly yes, but in place of who?

Goulding wouldn't get into my top three Wigan scrum halves in the last twenty years.

Slow as a Gods horse but had a decent kicking game. Poor discipline, both on and of the field.

Id rather lose the odd game in the short term to allow genuine young talent that we have at the club to flourish especially so in the current financial climate and the reduction in salary cap rewards.

A signing of this nature would be a slap in the face for all the hard work and money we invest in our heralded junior development.

If we were reliant on Matty Smith maybe but we have Wheeler and Eastmond kids with pace, vision and footwork - real potential which needs experience to flourish.

Given no-one in Britain can produce a decent three quarter I dont mind the likes of Gids and Soliola being purchased, but when we have genuine potential in specific positions id like to see it given a chance to develop.

This is the St Helens way, fore runners in youth development for which we should be immensly proud and appreciative.
