| I'm not sure what Wellens in the centre can offer - other than making an already painfully slow back line even slower. It would be embarrassing watching him attempt to keep up with Makinson on a break out of the fullback position.
On the other hand, he would be the ideal bench man, capable of deputising in all but one position - prop. He'd certainly give us far more options than someone such as Wheeler.

| Dropping Wello is much needed, not only because he's now failing, but to give his eventual replacement the chance to get some game time when the pressure is off. This season is a write off, with interim coaches and us in mid table, it's the perfect opportunity to look longer term now. Makinson or Lomax or whoever to fullback has to be a priority.

I don't think wello can play centre, he's far to slow.

| To be honest, I'd be tempted to start Foster at centre before Wellens. He's lacking in size - but he does have the centre's instinct - good hands, knows how to put a winger away etc. At this moment Wheeler's struggling to put away his tea.

But can catch the ball, tackle and pass - all of which our current centres couldn't do on Sunday.

And what happens when he's up against speed? Wellens' tackling has never been a major issue. The problem is [igetting to the player[/i to make the tackle.

You'd probably find he'd be all over the place in defence and his lack of pace could be a real problem

| Quote: Carlos Alberto "Need to bite the bullet and give Hohaia or Lomax an extended run at FB. See what they can do there. Bring Gaskell back in to cover the move. Rush's persistence with the same team is almost as crushingly obvious as Royce's love for the 17th man to do bugger all.'"
I've been saying all season, you need to drop Wheeler as he has been a massive let down for you, especially given all the bigging up he has had on these boards for the last year or two.
You need to move Wellens into the centres where he doesn't need as much speed. There's nothing wrong with Wellens' ABILITY to tackle - he's just very slow these days, and he will no doubt tighten your defence up on that side.
Hohaia needs to stop pretending he's a stand off, and should be at full back where he belongs.
You need Lee Gaskell back to partner Lomax. Lomax is only every any good when he has Gaskell at the side of him.

Whilst I don't necessarily disagree, the question should be: Would he have been an improvement on Shenton/Wheeler in defence yesterday?
For me the answer is a clear yes and it is an obvious solution to getting some pace in at FB without dropping our captain (and one of our best players this season IMO) All opinions.

| Problem with installing Rush until the end of the season is that we now appear to be in cruise control. He knows he is going back to his old job at the end of the season, he knows Brown is coming in next season. This season is now turning into one big, dead duck, just floating along with the current.

Based on current form just about anybody would be an improvement on those two. But are there other players who might prove more effective?
If we are to move Wellens anywhere it should be to the bench where he could extend his career by possibly eighteen months (in a similar fashion to Veivers when his legs went) as a utility player. It's rare to find one player who can cover all positions bar prop in an emergency. And it would allow Rush or Brown to be far more flexible picking and utilising the remaining three sub positions.

Whilst I agree, unless we want the biggest dummy spit in the history of RL then I'd say its either Wellens starting or Wellens not playing at all.

But it was always going to be that way. Installing an interim coach into a squad that needs major surgery is never going to work. Solidity and ship steadying were no doubt the remit given, and I'd say they've achieved that. Had we played better against Wigan things would look a lot more rosy.
We should have asked Huddersfield to release Brown. Their succession plan is already in place and biding it's time to take over, so us taking him now wouldn't have been too major an issue. It would give him the time needed to make the structural changes we need for next season and to begin the process of change. Instead we're very likely to have a really rough period at the start of next season as those changes happen, likely ruining another campaign before it's really even started.

Absolutely. Waiting a full season for a coach is fraught with danger. Whose to say Brown's stock won't collapse (like Justin Morgan or even Iain Millward) between now and then? We'd look pretty silly awaiting a coach no-one wants come the start of the year.
What if players start piling up bad habits (as they appear to be) under Rush? Brown could be forced to spend half his first season ironing them out.
What if some outstanding candidate suddenly becomes available next week? Again, we'd be the laughing stock shackled to Brown whilst some big fish slips away and into the hands of our rivals.
