So, obviously, Paul Wellens.'"
Sorry Dux, you failed to say what Rogues is.

Paul Wellens has been a great fullback and still is one of the best fullbacks in super league even though he's lost most of his pace and ain't a huge threat with the ball these days but he makes up for that in other ways.
He's awesome in defence, best fullback under the high ball, always in postion and joins the line when he should do but his only weakness is clearing his own line.
In the short term i'd take wello over sam, pat and amos without a shadow of a doubt but in the long term i think sam tomkins will be the best fullback in super league and maybe one of the best in the world.
Pat Richards is a winger and Amos is crap.

So if theoretically Wigan offered Saints Tomkins for a year and in return got Wellens for a year you wouldn't want them to accept? Come on, obviously Sam Tomkins was a better player than Paul Wellens last season, never mind next season.

Really Rogues, do you not get bored of that same old trick.

As for the original discussion, my reservation about picking Wello is that he's probably toward the end of his career. Wouldn't you be better picking someone who's going to be around longer term in order to create more stability?

I wouldn't want Sam Tomkins as our fullback over Wello. Wello is a much, much better fullback than Sam Tomkins. Sam Tomkins may improve and become a better fullback than Wello has been when Sam Tomkins has had some kind of career in rugby league at fullback, but right now he has a considerable way to go to be as good as Wello at fullback.

true - but in terms of the senior players, who is guaranteed to be around for the next 5 years.
Pryce, Graham, Flannery, Meli, Puletua, Perry, Gardner are those I would class as senior players who are all OOC next year, or getting to the end of their career.
Wilkin or Roby are the only other candidates who are guaranteed to be around for the long term.

Roby has a lot of positive attributes for a captain - high work rate, brave, leads from the front, has big plays in him etc, but I think most of us [iassume[/i he's a big of a quiet lad, and may not have as much influence on the players around him. We may be wrong, after all Captain Fantastic's auto biography was called "The Quiet Man".
If I were a betting man, I'd go for Graham.

| I've said from day one it has to go to Graham. If you want him to stay then you'll have to offer him everything but the kitchen sink, and if he stays then great, if doesn't then the club will have tried their best.
As Saints fans it must be a worry that you could potentially lose Graham, Eastmond and Pryce at the end of 2011. It's hard enough replacing any top player at a club, but to replace three just isn't going to happen, well not with like for like.

I've just praised the hell out of Sam the runt Tomkins, so why the sarcastic remark?
Yes Sam Tomkins was better player than wello last year but wello is a real fullback. Sam is just learning the game at fullback, so yes I'd take wello now over the Sam of now.

| TBF Wellens has been by far and away the best full back of the SL era.
That is of course true if you take Kris Radlinski out of the equation
A very good player though is Wello
