He said "Had".
It's past tense.
Wilkin's problem is he promises to be genuinely top drawer, then rarely backs it up at the same level.
Good performer, and I agree he's underrated, but he doesn't reach the heights he seems capable of on a regular enough basis.

At the time it was the best D, SL had seen and we did have an arduous extra game back in 2006 that Wigan didn't have to prepare for last season
The problem Wilkin has given himself is that he has shown he has bags of talent with some outstanding performances. But then he doesn't use them very often and as he isn't seen making 50m breaks, kicking 40:20's and scoring tries a lot of the work he is doing generally goes unnoticed.

We also kept our scores against to single figures during the play offs, whereas Wigan were averaging 15 points against when the competition picked up.
We also had the extra exertions of a Challenge Cup winning run (conceding an average of 10 points per game) whereas in 2010 Wigan failed to carry their mean defence into the cup comp, conceding an average of nearly 19 points per game and going out as soon as they met SL opposition.
Seems it's easy to have a 'mean' defence (which in Super League games was only decimals away from Saints 'points against' anyway) when you can't back it up across the board.
But yeah, Wilkin - top grafter, but you feel he could be so much more.

I don't think you can add Grand Final runner up to his list of successes with the side he had, either. He is simply not the coach that fans make him out to be.'"
[iWhat!?[/i - Success can ONLY be measured by the number of Grand Final wins you achieve?
If you finish top of the league at the end of the regular season this is NOT success? Are all SL coaches other than the GF winner FAILURES?
You're not sounding too credible here.

| Since this is a thread about Jon Wilkin ...
Where are all the posters who suggested that Jon Wilkin couldn't back up on his performance at Hull? C'mon, admit it! Confession is good for the soul and all that ...

I wasn't one who suggested he couldn't but lets face it, he wasn't as good as last week (most played half paced at times) and he was only playing against part timers...
Next week is when he is going to matter, especially with Kyle likely to be missing, a call up for Karalius?

I think who ever said, let's see if he can back it up prob was talking about the hudds game.
We need wilkin to play the way he did at hull to stand any chance of a win against hudds.

No, you're presuming things here. Read the whole sentence - 'with the side he had' was the most important part of it.

Are you calling me a child or mentally challenged? Surely you could be a little more definitive with your insults.

You're right, please accept my sincere apologies it was a sprinkle of friendly banter between rival tribes. Don't be challenging me to a duel or anything.

I think we'll have to give him a call up, what have we got to lose?

The side we had was not the side we had under Millward. And our biggest challengers had gained significantly (not least - in Leeds' case - because of the excellent crop of youngsters they had coming through at the time which supplemented their established personnel).
Every coach after Millward has been forced to come to terms with steadily diminishing backline potency (with the exception of Lyon) and the retirement/transfer of the likes of Martyn, Sculthorpe, Newlove, Iro, Hoppe, Fairleigh, Britt etc.
It's not like Anderson was coaching the SL equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters. So, no. He didn't underachieve. Or at least not in the context of the league at that time.
