Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. (Winston Churchill):d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_40218.jpg

Quote: Tez the Saint "In all honesty, I would love us to have a more attacking full back, someone who contributes more in an attacking sense, but the effort and commitment he gives week in week out is inspirational, and as I said, if the other 16 blokes who took to the field last night gave half of what he did, we wouldn't have been in that situation.'"

Yeah, he is so inspirational. His knock ons, dropped ball, absence from defence and ineptitude in attack just inspired us to the nth degree yesterday.

Giving his all, if indeed that's what he does these days, is not enough - or should not be enough - to keep a player in the side.

Quote: St pete "Did you notice are forwards was getting in at 1st receiver at times and ball handling ?'"

Yes, Perry played at no 6 on 2 occasions yesterday. I also noticed Wellens is no longer the slowest player in the back line that nomination goes to Meli.
We will get back to playing with the right energy levels and effort, but my biggest concern is still our half back situation. Yes they were behind a beaten pack but they don,t have the right mind set to boss the team around the park.
We were saying the same thing last year, we don,t have an inspirational leader to give the team belief ( Joynt, Cunningham, Sculthorpe, Graham etc)
Also I would go to say that Roby is not as good a player as 5 years ago, he is more hard working and important to the team but he is no longer a consistent game changer.

He was poor last night, but it's very difficult for a full back to do anything when the opposition are breaking through at will, and have 3 or 4 men supporting the ball carrier when a break is made. We had no field position whatsoever ever last night, and attacking opportunities were extremely limited. The same applied to Lomax and Gaskell, we had no platform last night to create anything, so to place the blame at the hands of the back line is not fair IMO.

If you are looking to point the finger at someone, the forwards are the ones you need to be looking at, not the full back.

Quote: Tez the Saint "And you say others have little knowledge of Rugby League.

Last night had absolutely nothing to do with the Half-Backs, they were playing behind a beaten pack from the first minute until the last, and ended up kicking from the own 20-30 meter line for the majority of the game. It had nothing to do with their ability to control the game, the fact of the matter is they were on the back foot all the time, and as a Half-Back, to control the side on the back off that is practically impossible.

The blame lies with the forwards, and they deserve all the stick that's coming to them.'"

As a Warrington supporter can I say this is totally right. Your pack was dominated by what is a very good Huddersfield pack. The one thing I can blame your HBs for though was the clueless 'options' on the last tackle.

You say no blame on the HBs, but they didn't help things. Beaten pack or otherwise they made the wrong ball options in the few times we had the ball in an attacking position.

For me the whole team were a total mess yesterday. I blame the lot of them. But I lay least blame in the hands of the halfbacks because of the messed up situation last season which is bound to impact this season. As for Wello, he had similar problems last year too it is just that they were exaggerated yesterday.

These early games are pretty meaningless. Saints being humiliated by Huddersfield at this stage of the season is entertaining but doesn't tell us much. NB may be adopting a Leeds style approach for all we know. Wigan played easily the best rugby last seasson, but unfortunately they peaked in June and didn't have enough left in the tank when it came to the play offs. I'm not celebrating the demise of Saints yet...

It was obvious to me that Huddersfield came with a very simple game plan. Run harder, tackle harder, move in faster, play the ball quicker. They achieved all of those things and totally dominated the game.

Our pack was second best, TP is a monster and for the size of him, you'd expect he'd be more dynamic than he is. Perry touched the ball once in the opening 20mins before being subbed. Boof is simply too small for a prop and Manu, whilst he did put himself about, I think he was trying too hard with the offloads, costing us a lot of possession.

Lomax was non-existent but playing behind a pack that was dominated, its hard to expect much, and Gaskell just doesn't have the distribution skills for a top class 6 IMO. He's a victim of his size - as a junior his strength was his running game, which isn't as effective at SL level.

I'm sure they will all be working hard to turn it around in training this week but considering the hype around Nathan Brown and the new signings, you would have hoped as a team they would have shown up for the first game of the season. From where I sit, it was clear some of the players weren't happy with sections of the crowd booing at half time as they were leaving the field. Rightly or wrongly, it costs people a great deal of money to buy season tickets, especially for families, and its frustrating to think your hard earned money has been spent to watch a team who arguably didn't show up.

On the Wellens issue, whilst this may be his last season, and last night was one of his least impressive performances, it makes even less sense to me that we didn't even appear to be in the running for Greg Eden who is one of the most promising attacking full backs in the league. In Eden, I see a ready made replacement for Wellens, who could have offered us even more from an attacking perspective.

I agree that our recruitment over recent years has been a little questionable, Perry Hohaia and Laffranchi are three overseas imports who simply haven't delivered.

Well, based upon the way results have gone today, at the end of round one it seems Saints are going to be second from the bottom of the league. Only Salford below us.

Correction: I think we may be third from bottom as Bradford have just scored again!

Further correction: Wakey converted their lone try but we didn't, so I think I was right the first time! Only Salford below us.
