If they gave the stadium contract to a french firm and french workers, the BNP (British Nazi Party) would be in town drumming up support within 20 - 30 seconds.

I heard that too.
The government grant was awarded in part to build that access road but I'm not sure where it was supposed to begin on this side of the linkway?
The government grant was also for cleansing the site. That work should have started by now, or at least be starting imminently, as Pilks' lease on the bottle storage was due to end in April.
Anyone heard anything about the stoopid bottle shop that looked like it could have killed the whole thing off before the credit crunch took over as the main threat?

| According to my source (he built the bridge, not on his own although he will tell everyone he did I lie but he is my son-in law, so it's allowed) the bridge had to be built as part of the planning consent to allow access for emergency vehicles.

Yup, we know that.
It began life as a footbridge and became a road bridge when the stipulation was made for emergency access. I assume it's still going to carry foot traffic as well as emergency vehicles. I just don't know where the bridge was due to start from on the town side of the linkway.

It was designed and built with the new stadium in mind, as the planned bridge over the linkway goes nearby.
The plan is that spectators travelling from the town centre will walk over the canal bridge and over the bridge across the linkway to the new stadium.
It also is an emergency vehicle route for the new chamber of commerce building. As such an access route was made from the linkway to this bridge that is wide enough for a fire engine.
Pics of were Bridge is
and the bridge itself
These are from January of this year.
