| You can't slag of Gaskell, its ridiculous to do so.
He had a bad kick straight into touch and a pass into the stand, but created alot and looked more a threat with the ball. Not a perfect performance, but a good one for a young guy playing 1/2back in one of his first few games without much support from his partner.
Saddened has just gone over board because for once one of his match predictions almost came true.
Our defence seems lax. The oppo seem to be able to get too easy yards up the middle, even without particulary quick ptbs. Our attack seems too one up and one dimensional.
Quins gave ABSOLUTELY nothing away in terms of penalties and turnovers. Whereas, when something goes our way, like a penalty not finding touch, Meli catches it and manages to run into touch on the return!?

Bit harsh. Saddened is actually one of the more intelligent Saints supporters on this website. Not that that's saying much necessarily!
Actually and being serious for a moment I do think there's a bit too much pessimism here, Saints aren't THAT bad. This still looks to me like a transitional era rather than the kind of desperate slump Wigan suffered in the mid-noughties. You'll have a season or so in the doldrums but will recover once you've cleared out the old timers like Wellens and some of the players who simply aren't good enough to wear a Saints shirt. Assuming of course that you've got the right leadership at the club?

| Tonight:
1 - Wellens 3/10 Like public transport. Late, slow and stunk. He's not even Mr Reliable anymore
1 - Laboured return by Wellens +1.5 metres
I'm not a Saints fan and you guys obviously see him play a lot more than me but maybe you should give Wellens a bit of slack. He's playing with damaged ribs

I notice you don't argue with any of the points I made. There is no sensationalism in there, no silly 'we're terrible and going to finish bottom' predictions.
The team isn't playing in a manner that will enable them to win games. The one out nature of so many of our sets is so firmly anti-Saints and so behind what the progressive sides in Super League like Quins, Huddersfield, Warrington and Wigan are doing. They put the ball through hands, we trundle.
My most controversial point is about Gaskell. He gets involved, tries things. But I just think his introduction into the halves should be when Leon Pryce is with him to take some of the pressure off him. I think this spell in the team could do as much damage to Gaskell's confidence as it will benefit him in experience.

Thought for years that a team as good as Saints should have a much better full back. Been far too slow for years (remember the giant Ali Lauititi out-pacing him in a chase to the line a few years back). Seems like a nice guy but, Saints you could do a lot better.

| Wouldn't read too much into this result other than Quins with a new coach look like Quins with a new team.
They are playing nearly text book rugby, few mistakes, few penalties, quick play the balls, neat kicking game and good defence.
Saints with a new coach also look like Saints with a new team, a team that has forgotten how to motivate themselves (unless they are playing Wigan) and offering bollockings rather than encouragement when someone cocks up.
You'll never replace KC because he was a one off but whilst he was playing, I never once witnessed him critising his team mates, or turning his back on someone because they'd made a mistake.
Unlike a certain Mr Graham.

| well i posted ages ago we would be in the bottom six. We have not improved since 2006 but gone downhill. We have had our time in the sun, time for others. We need new backs and to stop giving contracts to over the hill aussies/kiwis.
Lets face it we will not win owt. Thank god for salford and wakefield.

1649_1338292262.jpg I have followed the LONDON CLUB since I was in my teensl even though born in St Helens and still live nearby and went to the first game at Fulham, also Big West Ham Supporter:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_1649.jpg |

| I do not accept the excuse about young players and inexperienced players, we have had the same for many seasons now, as a few have truthfully admitted it was the way Quins approached last nights game and the attitude on the pitch that brought the success, if it is just down to a new coach at The Stoop, then it has worked even if he is only aged 30 and has not coached a Super League club before.

You are missing the point. The poster was making a statement about all the team vs Wakey were under 25 - which I agree is really good and should be appauded.
My point is that the only reason that was because a lot of the oldies who are over that age are injured and your full strength first choice team team would have a lot few er of these young talented players.
Things have improved since Smith got the job, but before that, under cullen and his sucessor, wire would only play a young player if a "senior" player was injured - that was their only chance and even then it wasn't much of a chance as they were usually dropped when the injuered player became available.

I think that's not a good comparison. The 2006 squad is one of the high water marks in SL. It was bolstered by money that may not be available again (or at least not for many years). Chairmen today would suffer cardiac arrest if they had to invest the kind of cash we did in Sculthorpe. If we're now saying that the 2006 squad is the "minimum standard" expected as far as playing talent is concerned we're going to be beating ourselves up for many seasons to come.
