fair point, you can't really argue with that

| I don't like to write young players off, but as far as I'm concerned Tyrer just doesn't have the goods. He looked good in his debut but since then I've seen nothing to recommend him other than Gardner-esque close range finishing. On the other side of the coin he's consistently displayed wayward defence and sloppy handling, both in the Super League and the Championship.
Hopefully I'm wrong and he'll carve out a good super league career, but I'll be amazed if he ends up in a Saints jersey again.

You can, as Kevin Penny would attest to.

I dont think his defence was as bad as 1 in, 1 out Penny

| Tyrer is always maligned for the performance at Cas, where IMO he was badly let down by the defenders inside him that day. The loose forward Westerman was not playing at centre opposite him that day, yet it was him running all over him (and he was tripped by Wellens chasing one player for one of the tries).
Penny is another that was castigated for poor defence of others. Whilst he isn't the strongest one on one tackler, he was playing outside King at his very worst and Briers doing his usual hiding act a lot of the time, and being left 2 on 1.

| Thought it would be worth bringing this thread back up after another good performance today. Keep it up.
He is still only 21, it wouldn't surprise me at all if we end up giving him a contract extension.

| Quote: FearTheVee "Put it this way - the difference between Lomax (at the age of 1icon_cool.gif and Wheeler (19) on the wing last season compared to Tyrer (who turned 18 the year he made his debut) was humungous.
They don't display any of the glaring weaknesses Tyrer had in his game, and look better with the ball. And neither of them were usually outside backs in the youth set-up either, which Tyrer was.'"
Disagree to some extent re this.
I thought Wheeler was poor on the wing. I personally thought he struggled to handle kicks and was positionally all at sea. Understandable though considering he is more of an inside back.
Put him at centre and imo he is far superior to Tyrer at the same age, due in part to Wheelers better tackling technique and superior rugby brain.
Lomax has looked pretty solid in games played, but even he has come up with youthful howlers that have directly cost trys.
The ideal scenario is for Tyrer to come on really strong this season at Salford. He could then potentially replace Meli on the wing next season.

Just thinking that myself. Only time will tell, but if we have to replace Meli and Gidley we don't have that much time as we need to be looking for someone now if we are bringing in someone from down under. If we are looking at home-grown talent then he deserves the same chance as every other young player at saints.

He made two mistakes last night so far as I can remember: one was to come in from the wing, letting a try through, and the other was knocking on close to the opposition line. Other than that he seemed to work hard in defence. He is rock solid under the high ball. In fact, I think he is nuts: the way he jumps gives the impression he is fearless.

One swallow does not make a summer.
Credit to Tyrer , he could have sunk without trace having gone
to Crusaders reserves effectively and being injured last season.
He seems to have lost weight (puppy fat) but not strength
and is doing well.
Good luck to him , but he is not a Saints winger.
Hopefully the departure of Meli and Gardner will
allow a Quirk,Sullivan or Albert plus a pacey rookie
to be recruited.

Watched his try from the semi at Old Trafford on you tube yesterday. What would you pay for a winger who could do that these days. Quirky wasnt even a rep player was he?

Sadly the days of lightening quick wingers are as good as over imo due to the tactics employed today.
Would love to see a winger who could go the length of the field; however unless they are 6ft 3, can take high bombs with ease, can share the workload burden in the middle of the field and defend manfully, then they are going to struggle to make it.
Kevin Penny is a case in point. 20 years ago he would be a star of the game. In todays environment he is a muppet.
Time to wake up and smell the coffee as they say.

The Aussies have 6ft+ wingers who can go the length of the pitch - as evidenced each week on the NRL highlights reel.

The key though is they are big and fast
They are giants compared to the likes of Tony Sullivan, Barry Ledger,Les Jones, Vollenhoven, Frank Wilson etc etc.
