| Quote St. Etrigan="St. Etrigan"So my guess is that nobody actually knows the answer to my question and once again a thread starts to drop into chaos.
My faith in the players knowing the actual rule is slightly higher than the TV commentators but I wouldnt be risking any money on either of their answers. The ref should have been able to make the right decision - I am quite happy if that is the case - but the fact that I cannot find any reference to it in the rule book - and it seems nobody else can either - makes me wonder if it is simply an interpretation - I would have thought that something as obvious as which 2 reference points to judge an offside decision against would not be left to interpretation.
Anyway thanks for the help the ones of you who gave it but it seems clear to me that none of us actually know the answer. I have sent an e-mail to Stuart Cummins to see if he can help - If I get a reply I will let you know.'"

Quote St. EtriganStuart Cummins wrote : "I am happy with the call. The view you get from the rail camera is slightly ahead of the play, but the rule is that both of Smith`s feet had to be behind the ball - that is the key to this."
"If you look at the video sequence you will see that Smith checks himself, waiting for McGuire to kick through, and his body is leaning forward."
"But the key for the VR is to look where Smith`s feet are. His left foot is on the ground and when the ball is kicked his right foot is behind his left foot. His left foot is the key."
"The VR is looking at the point where the ball is kicked. Phil judged that Smith`s left foot was behind where the ball is kicked."
"Phil was adamant that he had no doubt about his decision, and he was sufficiently confident to award the try without resorting to using the benefit of doubt that a referee can use when he isnt certain about the decision"'"

| the offside rule can't refer only to 'planted feet' can it? Otherwise all you need to do is run ahead of teh kicker and jump off the ground at the point of the kick?
anyway, i thought smiths 'planted' foot was probably the only bit of his body that was behind the ball so while he looked clearly offside, closer inspection shows that the ref got it right.
It doesn't really matter what the press or teletext say, i saw one article which said saints were robbed because his (Eastmonds disallowed try) foot was above the touchline not on the line - clearly forgetting that he then went on to hit the corner flag well before grounding the ball.......

| For me it was offside. However it was that close it could have gone either way. The way I look at it, if there hadn't have been a video ref at the game Ganson would have given it so it would've had the same outcome.

| Come on please, you lost and would still have done without the try! if we looked at changing rules and tightening them every time a team feels something went wrong we would be in a mess as a game!

Smith does look offside but the purlple line should be parallel to the white one showing it was much closer than that

| forgetting the line, all you have to do is look how far he is, compared to the kicker, away from the line behind them.

| looking at those two pictures someone must have photo-shoped Smiths position. Every other player is in the same spot on the pitch with the same body angle except Smith who seems to be quite far back in the second. Also agree on the purple line. Its not a parrallel line and therefore can not be used to judge.
For me it was offside. I was always taught that the back foot was the offside line (on all aspects of the game ) not the kicking foot or the ball. Academic i know but leaves a bitter taste when you think it was the deciding factor
