Very sad news indeed and let's hope the RL community get behind his family and friends.
RIP Terry.

R.I.P. Terry.

Seeing as it's the Grand Final next week, there will probably be a minutes silence for him.

Regardless of your feelings for Terry on the pitch, I'd urge ALL Saints fans to respect the Minutes Silence remembering that you are at Old Trafford representing our club, and with due respect to his family.

I think it is too risky to do a mins silence. I'd go for a mins applause to drown out idiots.

First things first - my heartfelt condolences to all of his immediate family and friends. The tragic circumstances of this incident go wider than rugby. Terry RIP

But can I offer the viewpoint (and if I am completely out of step with the rest of the RL fans then I apologize for any hurt this may cause) that at the showpiece event of Rugby League in this country we should not be seen to be honouring a man who is currently banned from the sport due to willingly taking illegal drugs that , by his own admission, he was taking because he thought they were undetectable not because he made a mistake or had been taking them unbeknownst to himself.

Now with this being the very last domestic game it does put clubs in an awkward position. And I would fully endorse and encourage a minutes silence being held at the grounds where he has played for the teams Leeds, Wigan, Bradford, Wakefield at their next home games as that is a more personal show of respect. But, as is the case now, if a past player dies then it is very rare that this respectful showing is actually held away from the clubs he has played for.

If the RFL do decide to hold this silence on Saturday then I hope that everyone does respect it - but I have a horrible feeling that with the ill feeling some sections of the Saints support have towards the man then this could end up looking very bad - I hope I am massively wrong.

SAINTS THE ORIGINAL AND PERENNIAL CHEATS For sale full Saints kit (circa 1989). Shirts in pristine condition, but shorts badly soiled. For 27 - 0 you get a trophy For 75 - 0 you get sod all. Wigan had eight in a row Saints have five in a row:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_3076.jpg

Thank you for your respect. He must have been a troubled man.

His family must be devastated.

I hope they don't have a minutes silence because I'm sure somebody will disrespect it, then somebody else will have their opinion and we all know where it will lead to from there.

Again many thanks for your comments, it's quite humbling.

I think you make very good points. As awful as this news is, I don't think it would be fitting to have a minute's silence on Saturday. Rugby League fans will be able to pay their respects in many other ways over the coming days.

The majority of us are decent human beings. Life is far more important than sport and whatever any of us may have thought of Newton as a player, nobody would wish this on him and we should all offer our condolences to his friends and family. A very sad loss and as Rugby League fans we come together as a community in sad times like this.

I can see where you are coming from but don't agree. I don't think that one aspect should be allowed to overshadow the fact that a great player has died in such a tragic way.

Something should be done on Saturday, be in a silence a minute or Wigan players wearing black armbands for the game.

Agree with all of that. The additional problem with the Grand Final is the increased amounts of alcohol intake combined with larger numbers than usual of gangs of senseless idiots. And of course this time it has even more emotion linked to it with it being the local derby.

As someone else suggested, if they do do it, have an applause rather than a silence, that way people can opt out of applauding without the shameful booing causing upset.

It is very very sad that the only time Rugby League gets the "Top Story" on BBC Sport is when a player is found dead, it really does pain me we are looked down on such much by so many.

Obviously Terry wasn't my favourite player for many a on-field reason but I would never ever wish this on my worst enemy or any other family.

No matter who you support Terry deserves the best of respect.

Such a sorry way to end. Thoughts are with the Newton Family.

I agree with this.

I also think it is a far safer and wiser option to do nothing on this occasion.

I think that would be a completely appropriate way of showing their respect for one of their own - and the Wigan supporters can show their own respect by a similar action or - as many are intimating - having the name Newton put on their shirt - or whatever means they feel is most appropriate.

Just as a point of clarification I would feel that the silence was inappropriate if this were any other player from any other club who was currently serving a Drugs ban in the same circumstances.
The uniqueness of this tragic event I feel is completely un parallelled in any sport so we do not have any blue print to work from.

I hope that whetever action is taken that we do not give none RL supporters the chance to discredit our sport or the memory of Terry Newton.
