I'm always amazed at how 10 metre lines confuse speccies, with many seeming to think that the defensive line should be taken back to the next white line.
This is especially prevalent at Saints with the 20 and 40 metre lines that are about 16m apart.

Riley did the same thing to Foster in the second half alas the ref missed it.

Myler also tackled Foster without the ball when chasing a Wellens kick through after a break in the second half.
For some reason Alibert didn't spot that either.

| Quote: Billinge_Lump "I thought the rule was that the defending line had to be 10m from the play the ball, not where the referee decides to stand.
Alibert takes up position about a metre from one line, the ptb is at least two metres behind the next 10m line. All the Saints players involved in the subsequent play are on side. I don't understand why there was any confusion over this once it went to the VR.'"
But the referee takes them back the 10metre, surely hes the judge of the 10metres and it goes off his opinion of the 10m.

Next time you're at the game, look out for it when the defence is trying to move up extra fast. The ref will go back a bigger distance, more like 12 metres, the defending players will be eager and have their feet infront of him but he won't blow. The home speccies will swear profusly, but the defending team will actually be back the stated distance.
Its a good tactic by refs to avoid offiside offences being commited.

Of course it goes off his opinion of 10m, but he doesn't have to stand at the 10m mark.
The easiest way of changing this is to make every club have a 100m pitch and mark it like they do in American football.

I noticed that on the replay. He grabbed his ankles didn't he, bringing him down.

Yup, it's not even a 'I was going for the ball, honest ref' kind of ankle tap.

I know they do this, but if that was what Alibert was doing, then why did he ask them to go for offside? If he was going back 11metres instead of 10, then its not going to look like that to the video referee, thats what i was saying. I'd imagine the players know by now which referees do this, but it makes it a little confusing for the fans, IMO. It'd make more sense for the referees to go back 10m, and then anyone in front is offside, simple.

Will the pitch at your new ground be full size?

Oh, don't ak me about what Alibert was thinking, I've no idea. I was talking generally.
People are just quick to judge the player offisde based on the ref, not the actual distance back of the player.
A game with fewer penalties will invariably be better to watch, so if a ref can get a team onside more often by whatever means, I'm all for it.

To be fair to him, Wilkin did get out of the line fast, but his back foot was alongside Alibert when the ball was played

I've got a suspicion it isn't, which is a bit ridiculous IMO.
