No your thinking of Alf Sutton, who was a very generous guy, I approached him for the first then sponsorship of a youth team/club and within a day he was back and said yes! he offered more than we had asked for as we had only quoted for jerseys and a cheap name, he said it had to be Umbro who then supplied Saints and shorts and socks, only problem he did not want his sponsors name on! so we just had the embroidered club badge.
No Pilkingtons were always wanting to get involved, I was only a school kid but how many remember the small part of the pitch they put electric heating into near the old score board end? It was a known fact that production went down at the many factories of Pilkingtons if Saints lost a match! but remember then the board was an headmaster and other such small businessmen and they looked on it as a boys club, why would they want a major company involved? small time thinking! in my class at school I was the only one that did not go to work for Pilkingtons first the Reporter Group while I was waiting to start with Radio City. |

Can't say too much on this board but it is fairly common knowledge that the Sutton's entrusted their businesses to a bunch of sharp suited people who quickly relieved the family of much of its fortune. Remember the mercedes dealer and the truck rental business.
Thats why they retreated to their core haulage and storage busineses - just about in time - but it was very close thing. They are under excellent managment now, but the family haven't been actively involved for a long time.
All I'm saying is that he wasn''t sharp enough to see these guys coming when a lot of other people did.

Well I must admit I know nothing about all that.
I do know that Alf Sutton had a very successful business at the time he wanted to join the board.
He was knocked back by the incumbent "business men" at the time.
Sound like he may have been a perfect fit then. Still didn't do to bad for himself though!
