| Some fantastic players mentioned already......
Overseas: Gordon Tallis
UK: Keith Senior (was gutted when he signed for Leeds from Sheffield)

| Ricky Stuart was the one guy I wanted us to get. We were always desperate for a play making scrum half and I think he signed only to break his arm and not come over. It was very disappointing not to see in the Red V.
As for UK players it has to be Martin Offiah doesn't it? Hanley may have been the better player but in the days before defending Offiah was an excitement machine and loved to entertain, which is a severely underrated quality.

| Quote: Noel Cleal "Dean Sampson. We should have signed him after but he had a contract to play the year after for the Auckland Warriors. As we are not a scummy club we respected that. We could have signed him instead of Bradford later in his career also.
Jamie Peacock
Henry Paul would be one of my choices, I was at that game at Belle Vue, they moved him from full back to stand off and he cut us to pieces, definately a class act.
Just to be different it would have been good to see Jonathon Davies in a Saints shirt.
It was always rumoured that he would sign for us but Widnes pipped us to it.
I don't rate him as a TV expert but again a class act on the field.

It was apparently the way the Saints board ostracised Alex Murphy during discussions with him that made him sign for Widnes - he didn't want anything to do with a club who valued their manager so little.

The one we heard at the time was he had pen in hand but needed a bit more time to think so went back to Wales and on the way back Paul Moriarty talked him out of it.How true this version is I don't know.
Ironically Moriarty signed for Widnes not long after too.
Remember ringing Saints newsline (that was our only way of accessing club info back in 1988!) and Stuart Pyke announcing he'd turned us down and signed for Widnes-was well gutted!

Dougie Laughton told a different story at one of the SPF panel nights.

| I remember when the first new stadium was announced, someone " in the know told me Saints had lined up a marquee signing non other than Brad Fittler, who I think was the Aussie captain at the time. I suppose it was a big a lie as the new stadium we were promised!
