Wello doesn't need justification. The fact that he's Wello is sufficient. He's a local lad, has been a brilliant fullback, loves the club, served his 10 years with everything he has and that's more than good enough for me. On top of that, he's cute.

Any Rugby League player that gives 10 years of great service to their club deserves a testimonial IMO. Whether you choose to support it is completely your choice.

| No don't get me wrong, I back Wello 100%.
However, Wello is a very rich man as a result of playing rugby for Saints. Does he need any more money, really?
In the modern climate, unless it is for someone like Bam a Lam Bennett, I would hope any "stars" receiving a testimonial would donate what they make from them to charity. But that is just me.

I agree with that.

Steady on I wouldn't think he's that loaded. It's not like footballers who are seriously overpaid. Unless he's been rattling up £100k a year for ten years I would think that he's still deserving of a testimonial.

I wouldn't say he was before the likes of Bennett though, players who have to retire through injury should always come first IMO.

| I don't see the need in comparing this to Bennett. Two different scenarios.
Paul has given us 10 years and deserves a testimonial as for the most of that, he wasn't paid anywhere near the big names of our club.
Mike clearly deserves it due to his forced retirement.

| I have no problem adding to Wello's retirement fund. He's earned it, the most committed player I have ever seen in the vee. It means as much to him as it does to any of the people on the terraces and in modern sport that is incredibly rare.
On the money issue Wello will certainly have earned enough from his career to be mortgage free and that in life is the big thing. He doesn't need to get a top job post retirement if his other half works as there will be no large bills going out. I can't see Wello pi$$ing it up the wall or being daft with his money, he seems too grounded and level headed for that to happen.
I'll be buying his DVD anyway, if it helps add to a golf membership for him, he's deserving of it.

He's earned enough that when he retires, he'll be able to fund himself education or training for a profession. Topping up his beer fund seems ridiculous to me.

Well, with children to look after and a mortgage to pay if he's able to fund his own education without any help from student loans then that's good because the career of a rugby league player is very short in relation to the number of years a person has to earn a living and after being so clearly dedicated to Saints all these years, he deserves some career security for the rest of his working life. And if that also means him enjoying a few beers on us then I certainly don't resent him that. Not one bit. I hope the beer is good!

I don't buy this short career being the end of his working life line of argument. It is a short career, but for almost all of his 10 years he'll be on well above the average wage of £20-30k a year, why should he stop working at 30? He's basically working part time so has had plenty of time to learn and prepare himself for life when his playing career finishes (this isn't a dig at Wellens, more a general comment on sportpeople).
They have a length of time doing something they love for a very healthy renumeration, most people would love to do similar but aren't born with the talent to achieve it.
