Quote: Offside Monkey "Newlove wasn't the same after he tore his Achilles. That may influence your decision.
Both of them were the best attacking centre in the league at their time (maybe even attacking player), but Newlove just made it look so easy.
You remember all those ridiculous passes that Lyon used to squeeze out the back to Gardner? They were often sensational - the one in the CC final at twickers springs to mind. However, plenty of those went to ground or in touch.
Newlove, on the other hand, never seemed to have that problem. Maybe his extra size afford him a little extra control.
defence wise was a similar story. Lyon wouldn't miss a tackle, but could get excited and rush out [ioccasionally[/i, which Newy never did.
Please don't let this sound like I don't think Jamie Lyon is one of the most sensational things I've seen on rugby pitch, because he is and, if reports are true, he's got better with age since he left us.'"
I love newy but Lyon was a class above. Jamie Lyon is the perfect centre and probably the best one seen in a saints shirt. He's fast, athletic, skilful, can do things other players can't and he defence is as good as it gets. He was a real wingmans centre. He's also a legend at manly which shows what calibre of player he was.
