But surely you can see that it was his will to win and do right for the club that caused all that? I doubt there has ever been a Saints coach who wanted to win as much as Millward did. For an Aussie he was fantastic in that regard. Now we have had 2 coaches after him who look more like poker players in comparison.

Not really, it's quite possible that it was because he's a cock (I've never met him so can't comment either way).
It was a fantastic time to be a supporter of the club though, I doubt we'll ever see a time like it again.

| Saints and basil we well together and he brought good attacking rugby back to saints.
We was always good to watch and he had a knack of knowing how to win big games.
I think basil going was helped by a top coach in DA coming in and putting defence into the team.
All in all I still like basil as we won a lot of finals with him.

Towards the end he'd lost that knack though.
Controversy or not, I think it was a good time for him to move on.

Yes I think you prob rite but I think the impact DA had made us forget just what a good job he did.
His record speaks for it self.

I can still see myself stood at the ground, head resting on hand, looking around and seeing fans applaud the team. I did the same. Never understood to this day why we applauded, must have been the water carriers I think. Went to a restaurant afterwards in Headingley, had plenty fans knocking on the windows and coming in to give us some banter, but nothing put me on my enchiladas and refried beans, yum yum yum a positive on a shyttttttt night.
Ian Milkyard sure gave us some rollercoaster moments.

it was a shocker, but in a way that is what so so good about the Millward era - it was a proper roller coaster ride. Never a dull moment.
For all the really bad results, there were even more really good ones.

The thrown games were funny and wouldn't have been an issue at all had Martin Gleeson not persuaded Longy to bet on the result.
DA was so cold and calculating but we really were the most boring side in the world and totally underachieved, winning 1 SL title in 3 years.

| Two great coaches. One revolutionised the attacking game (moving our attack away from the wings and through the middle with repeated dummy half runs) whilst the other reformed defence.
In that first season our defence was the best I've seen in Britain.

came first every year he was in charge, won 3 CC's 1 SL and and a WCC, whereas we averaged around 3rd under millward, good if your a wigan fan, but we wouldn't be happy with that now.
DA brought a new level of professionalism to our club and that seems to be continued under Slick.
I would rather have the past 4 years results than the 3 before that!

| Far too many people denigrate Millward's achievements (mainly because he went to Wigan). When he arrived at Saints he was the best coach in Britain by a mile. His tactics (relying heavily on dummy half running with dual hookers and switching players into unfamiliar positions) turned the game on its head.

I'm not denying his achievements, but the way he effectively through matches before cup games dissapointed me, we payed the same to go and watch them, and quite often we would lose the cup match anyway
