Club are doing the right thing here.

They have shown thier respect for him by offering him another deal, and also by announcing early that he is free to pursue offers elsewhere.

Longy is one of the greats at the club and im glad that for all parties involved that everything is out in the open re his future

If he is confident of having 2 years left, why not sign a one year deal and prove his worth for a second?

I would prefer him to retire on a relative high than see him carting himself round at the bottom of the league like Newlove did.

Even if his form has dipped this year he can still go out with another Wembley final and Grand Final appearance / win to his name.

Even if we were to offer him a two year deal, surely by the start of 2011 he'd be behind Eastmond and Smith in the pecking order anyway and thus be surplus to requirements? Surely he realised this as well.

Maybe - it depends if he needs the money or not. Can you see him making the move into broadcasting or coaching? I can't.

I can see both sides of the coin. Longy wants the best for his family so wants a 2 yr deal which is best for him and his family.

Saints know he is a shadow of the player he was. No pace, terrible passing and not to mention his kicking.

We would be mad to give him 2 more years. Even 1 seems mad on his current form.

He should take up the deal of another year and see how he plays.

i suspect that the 1 year offer will be more about helping to establish Eastmond and Wheeler in the half back positions rather than being the first choice number 7 every week. we will be short of experienced players should KC and Gidley leave, so we need some older heads around the club. im sure that Long is good for team morale too, which is an important quality to have.
