| Shenton's far superior to Turner. If Tony Martin wasn't injured then Turner wouldn't be in the Hull side (and, personally, I'd rather we played Crooks than Turner but Crooks is also injured).
Turner's had 3 or 4 good games earlier on in the season but has been appalling for the rest of it. Whilst he can run the ball alright and has decent upper body strength, his defence is woeful. We concede atleast 1 try in almost every game because of a defensive error by him, whether it's him running out of the line but not making the hit, or a poor read, or leaving his winger exposed.
I think that Saints have made an error in signing him if he's intended to be first choice.

| Where's this Turner's good in attack myth come from? He's rubbish at both, and his hop skip and jump 3 foot in the air when running from dummy half fools nobody. He's fast, that's it.
Poor player and Shenton is more than twice the player he will ever be.
Can't help thinking NB thinks he's got a Cudjoe/Lawrence/McGillivary type. He's going to be disappointed.

That's where I stand too. Shenton has been hung out to dry by Saints fans too quick to point the finger in the same way as what happened with Lance up until a couple of weeks ago. A lesson for all who did.

The 'Turner's good in attack' has come from him playing well in attack.
He's scored a few good tries. He's continued driving forwards through two tacklers to get the ball down. He's willing to pass to his winger and put him away. He's confident near the line and backs himself.
The hop skip thing is getting a bit old now and it hasn't been very effective for him, I agree.
As I and many others have said, he's massively let down by his defence and reading of the game.
Shenton is a superior player.

| People stating that Saints have gambled are missing the obvious, Shenton wasn't happy at Saints and wanted to go back to Yorkshire. This was showing in his performances, and also in his improvement since it was confirmed he'd be going home.
Saying that, I don't think Turner is that far behind him. He's certainly an athlete and that's what we need inour backline.

| I stick by what I said when we signed him:
"Raw, but the potential is certainly there. Could easily go either way but I don't see it as much of a downgrade on the 2011/2012 Shenton TBH and if we've saved cap as a result, it's the right move."
Plus I had a look at his stats at the time and, whilst I agree Shenton has improved recently, Turner had more tries and about double the number of busts and clean breaks as Shenny.
I'm still fairly pleased - Shenton's improvement recently has taken him from utterly anonymous to reasonable, let's not get carried away and think he's some sort of superstar.

| I am convinced to this day had Shenton stayed on the field in last years GF we would have won that there is no question in my mind. Shenton has been steady this year in defence but has offered very little in attack. Having said that could the injury in the Grand Final played on his mind too much???

| Saying Shenton is playing better now, therefore we should have kept him is a bit of a red herring for mine. He's playing better since he got his move back home. Some players just don't fit no matter how good they are at their home town. In his head he is obviously happier now, hence better on field performances.
Take Danny Orr. Not too many injuries whilst playing at Wigan or London but never really played at the potential he showed at Cas.
I know this personally, having seen someone working where they did not want to be, as soon as they secured new employment their tail was up for the rest of their time at work as they knew they were going to be leaving and hence performances improve.

| I had reservations when we signed him and I still do now.
Shenton is solid and dependable but doesn't offer much when we have the ball. He has been a disappointment for a 'marquee' player on a good wage. What he gives us is good work rate and doesn't miss that many tackles, especially the important ones. The worry I have is that Turner is going to end up to be much worse, especially defensively and his work rate. His work rate will have to be high and his pace and side step will need to be utilised otherwise we might all be disappointed.

| I thought we signed Turner as a "Work in Progress" player, some fans on here are pre judging him as though he is the finished article.
Don,t forget quite a few years we took a gamble on signing a "Work in Progress" bloke to develop as a classy half back.......that bloke was Sean Long.

No problem signing a "Work in progress" if he has good experience around him. His Centre partner is likely to be another kid in Josh Jones and his winger will probably be Tommy Makinson. Realistically we'll need more than a "work in progress".

| Quote: (Saint) "I'm still very, very happy with this bit of business.
Hull fans are queuing up to tell us how poor Turner is in D, but that stuff can be worked on, the crucial thing is he's a fantastic athlete with a load of raw potential and that's what we want from Saints threequarters. Shenton, as much as I like him and want him to succeed, is never going to have that bit of X-Factor needed. He can't bust a tackle or hurt someone in defence. The only thing he CAN do is potentially outrun the defence if someone puts him through a gap - which Turner can do as evidenced by outstripping our entire team (inc. Shenton) at Langtree Park earlier this season.
It's no contest tbh. Especially if, as people keep saying, Turner is on substantially less money.'"
Quite possibly, but after 3 years with us he is still making the same mistakes, so it looks like he either isn't working on them for one reason or another, or just doesn't have the improvement in him.
In all seriousness, you've signed one belter from us and one duffer.

I guess its just easier to rely on Josh Jones every week than to gamble on Wheeler being available. Also, since Royce has gone, there's no [iback on the bench[/i which was giving a lot of action to the likes of Wheeler.

Didn't play for the reserves against Hudds so it's a possibility!
