| Quote: bewareshadows "If you look at Browns record at Huddersfield he has not gone out shopping with a big cheque book. The biggest name he brought in was Brough, but did he not snaffle him from Wakey when they were in all kinds of trouble. So effectively got him on the cheap as Wakey needed the money.
At that point we still had Eastmond on the books, so there was no way we would have gone in for Brough.
But my point being that if you ask Huddersfield what he has done , he has took their players, that were no great names and took a year concentrating them on defense, before then working on other aspects of the game. I can't see us signing any big name players before he gets here, you have to look at our current contracts. In 2013 we have 7 big names up for renewal. By that point Brown will know if he has moved them on and if they can play his way.
If we are going to sign anyone for next year it maybe that missing prop.'"
One thing he has had at Hudds is time. We have to accept that if he is going to bring his methods to Saints, it may take time also, and not produce instant results. There may well be some players who don't like the new regime, and will have to be moved on.

| It's all very well saying he needs to sign this player and that player, but we may not have quota space to do it, we may not have cap space to do it and we there may not be the quality available elsewhere. Having looked at the OOC threads, there isn't a great deal of quality available, certainly in this country anyway.
For me he needs to create a culture of winning, give us a ruthless streak and produce more consistency amongst the group of players he has to work with. That works both offensively and defensively. A good coach is able to get that extra bit of quality out of players and I'm hopeful Brown can do that with an already good set of players who have success embedded in them. Sure we may not have won trophies in recent years, but this club expects success and we need Brown to lead from the front to get the players expressing themselves in the Saints way whilst encompassing that winning mentality. Daniel Anderson embraced it as did Millward and hopefully Brown can too.

Difference for millward and Anderson was that they took over a successful, confident side. The chances are that brown will inherit a side that hasn't won a trophy for six years or so, and certainly doesn't have a winning mentality or never say die attitude

Both coaches may have had better quality players to work with but we were a mess when Hanley was in charge in early 2000. We got smashed by Melbourne and again by Bradford and had a disruptive influence in Trindall in our side. Millward turned it around quickly because he instilled confidence into the players and had a winning attitude. We have plenty of good players here and Brown will have some good players to work with. Nobody predicted Maguire would win the title at Wigan in his 1st season after they finished 6th the year before and got knocked out of two Semi Finals but he did. The best coaches are able to get that little bit extra from good players and thats the job Brown has.

I agree that he has to work with what he has got, and that the squad should be capable of winning things. But instilling confidence and belief is a difficult thing to do. KC and Rush managed it for 2 games. Brown needs to do it for a whole lot longer.

| So ... I stumbled across this whilst looking for the Royce Simmons threads (don't ask, I was trying to prove a point)
Since it's 2 years to the day - how has Brown done? What would his/ saints list of priorities be for the next 2 years?

He has had some time, some players have moved, and we are seeing results. I'm happy with that.

| Nathan Brown's priorities this season:
1) Win the Grand Final
2) Win the Challenge Cup
3) Beat the pie-eating scum every time we play them

On the playing side up to the start of this season he'd proven nothing. We didn't seem to have a style or any particular focus and seemed lacking in planning and organisation, with no set moves at all.
This season is the polar opposite, largely due to Walsh. The performances have been much improved to the point where the side is largely unrecognisable to last season. If Brown was responsible for the recruitment this season, again he's done a remarkable job. If that was down to Rush or McManus then the majority of credit should go to them.

I think it was Brown who identified the players he wanted and McManus goes and gets them.

Disagree slightly, we've started the year playing the same way we finished last year. We took the painful road to get there - but given the lack of any halfback we did as well as we could of hoped for.
Recruitment has been fantastic this year, whomever is responsible deserves a lot of credit, long may it continue.
