| The name-dropping in the media has begun, with Meninga, Taylor, Fairleigh and Stuart the fore-runners. It seems certain we will look for an Australian and Morgan hasn't even been mentioned in some articles. Hoorah!

One of those rare occasions where the reality is better than the dream. Fortunately I live in this reality and it will be neither.

I've got to say, that thought did cross my mind ...
But only briefly.
We don't know when the players found out.
Pure coincidence.
Obviously.

forget the likes of bellamy coming over here next season,as it won't happen,he could take his pick of any aussie clubs should he wish!
you will obviously get the departing nrl coaches taking their only option available,so will be more than willing to move over here to re-build their reputation for a couple of seasons
wasn't nathan brown one of these afterall?
the rumours regarding morg's has been heard in yarkshire too,we all hope its true

| Quote: The Chief "I would agree with that if they had done what Wigan did in the late 80's and early 90's and lured talented players from other clubs with the promises of riches - blatantly ignoring the cap to further their own gain.
The fact is that the majority of players at Storm came through the junior set up. They have cheated in so much as they have paid inflated salaries in order to keep their hands on the talent that they as a club have produced. Im not condoning what they have done, I still think they cheated the system, but I think this case alone opens up a wider issue about the salary cap in general. Clubs who work hard to develop young players should reap the benefits of that players skills when they hit the top of their game. Younger players breaking into first team who then go on to become internationals (thus demanding increased contracts) - Kyle Eastmond the most recent example - should only have a proportion of their contract count towards the salary cap - say 80%. That way, clubs can reward players and recognise their standing in the game whilst themselves benefitting from that players service.
If a team ends up with a squad of 25 BRITISH players all internationals earning 20% more than their contemporaries at other clubs then were is the problem? They are rewarded for long service to the club and for their loyalty with a larger contract.
If a club can afford it, I dont see an issue with rewarding player development. Everyone is a winner.'"
Melbourne aren't the only club bringing great Aussie talent through the juniors. Just about every NRL outfit has either brought through or is in the process of bringing through one or more wunderkinder.
The key to Melbourne's success isn't a great junior pool. It's PAYING them ILLEGALLY to STAY - period. And we aren't talking a bit of cagey fiddling about the edges. Had that been the case they'd have been punished anywhere up to what the Bulldogs received. No, the Storm REDEFINED the whole concept of salary cap cheating. It was so blatant, so CYNICAL the NRL - who aren't known for taking a tough line with cheats - went nuclear and obliterated Melbourne's achievements from the record books. And they were absolutely right in doing so.

Do you mean like Paul Sculthorpe, Paul Newlove, Anthony Sullivan, Bobby Goulding, Kevin Iro, etc, etc.
Pet, kettle and black comes to mind.
I have ALWAYS wanted a some sort of reward for junior development and have brought it to the message boards for years. What is very strange is now that Saints are developing a few good youngsters Saints fans are thinking the same way.
I wonder why.

| Anderson to Potter to Morgan? Saints really are reducing the quality of their coaching staff. I would be disappointed at this news if I were a saints fan. As a wire fan it makes me chuckle!

So you've decided Morgan is defo getting the job? You'd best tell McManus that so he can call off the recruitment drive. I doubt Morgan is even on the shortlist but if he is, it will be clearly underneath the sub-heading 'Plan B.' There are at least 5 coaches ahead of him in the pecking order.
I can empathise with you trying to find humour in the disastrous coaching appointments of a rival though. My ribs still tickle from David Plange and Steve Anderson.

And its a noble idea. However, I think the league are trying to limit the risk of overspending. If you give a club license to spend 20% extra, then the likely hood is that (in the quest for success) they will - whether they can afford it or not.
If a club is bringing youngsters through, then they're always going to have firsrt dibs on tying them up in a contract if they want to keep them. Giving partial exemption on the salary cap would allow clubs to (to an extent) stockpile youngsters in the reserves.
Clubs know that a good youth set-up is the key to long term success. Leeds & Saints are all evidence of this. However, I don't particulary think that trying to keep young players in the pen they were brought up in is essential. The tighter quota rules means that clubs are looking for britsh talent to give a chance, this is the most important part for me - if we've got more british lads filling first team Super League shirts then our talent pool will start to improve. I'm not as worried about what academy they came out of.
Saints are bringing through youngsters that prob wont make it at Saints, but could still carve out a SL career and turn into reasonably good footy players (Matty Smith, Tyrer, Chris Dean etc). Look at the likes of Peter Fox and Ryan Atkins - both unsuccessful at their junior clubs, but have turned into good homegrown players.

| To be the best you need The Best.
The Justin Morgans and John Kears of this world need not apply. And we CERTAINLY don't require the dubious services of some fetch-me-carry-me from a Salary Cap cheating Ocker upstart club.
