Therefore, I have always interpreted the movement of the slide as if being pulled by the edge player.

What you refer to is a drift defence when defending further out field. Goal line defence is completely different, Wilkin rushed in on the lead runner leaving a 3 on 2 for Hodgeson to exploit. Nobody was to blame for the try, it was good execution by Warrington.
