| Although the club has not officially announced the captain for the coming season.
I was informed last night that the decision had been made and that it will be Paul Wellens.
Good choice if correct?

| He's earned it to be fair with excellent service and consistency to the club. He was probably the favourite for the role with Graham and Roby as the outsiders.
The captaincy seems to have been passed down quite alot in recent years so it's not a major problem for me when it'll change hands again in 2 - 3 years time.

| I think wello is the obvious choice he's got the respect of the whole club, he's been there and done everything and is St Helens lad.
I hope jammer is vice captain as I think he would grow in to the role and could captain saints for many years. (if he stays)

| Wello is the obvious choice but clearly not a long term solution. I imagine this will be one of the carrots dangled by the club in their negotiations with Jammer over his new contract.

| Maybe they should have one of those fancy Off Field Captain (Wellens) and On Field Captain (Graham) seemed to do him some good with England... he thought twice before blowing off at the Ref

| I'd imagine it would have been Graham apart from he's OOC soon. I'd imagine it would have been Roby but then Graham might end up staying.
In a year's time everyone will know where they stand and then it'll be Graham if he stays, Roby if he goes.

| Bizarre decision IMO. Wellens is a player who could easily find himself out of the side altogether if a fullback who can catch, tackle and run is found. Wello in a world class team with strike players all over the place was a great comfort blanket, in the current team with it's sub-par players he's found wanting.
I guess this decision would also tell us how the negotiations with Jammer are going. If he's not the Captain it can only be because he's headed for the NRL.

Depends if he plays Full Back or in the pack as a LF.

I don't think it means jammer is going if wello is made club captain, I can't see how that would have any bearing on it at all.
Wello has been captain before, he's our most experienced player and is highly respected by all at the club.
Jammer is still young and still needs to mature that little bit more before he IMO should be captain. It would be good to give him the vice captain and grow into the job for when the time is right.
Royce was in one of the rugby papers saying that jammer has not yet made his mind up and he thinks he will stay because he loves the club. He also said they will sit down with him soon.
The best players don't always make the best captains. In rugby league a captain needs to lead his team, be a good example, know when and how to talk certain players.

When was Wello found wanting last season exactly? And why should he find himself out of the side at all, never mind altogether? His only weakness is that he isn't Usain Bolt. Yet in spite of that he always seemed to be on the shoulder of the man with the ball last season, ready to take it forward.
Did you see the end of season review? Did you see the incredible catch he made against Hull KR at the Magic Weekend? I'd forgotten that one. Brilliant stuff.
So far as the captain is concerned, what Saints need is a leader. If Wello isn't a leader then he shouldn't be captain. He shouldn't be made captain just because he's been around the longest or because he's a local lad or even because everyone respects him. All those are great things and I think Wello's fab. But our captain should only be chosen based upon his leadership skill. Since we have lost Cunningham we need someone who can talk like Cunningham could talk, who can inspire, motivate, get them to dig themselves out of a hole, work harder, whatever is needed. Whoever is best at doing that should be our next captain, regardless of age, experience, ethnic origin or colour of boots.

don't mean to be a pain but that was more a very poor job in defence than a good attack from wello.
Captain should be Wellens next year
and then Roby

What, you mean the one when he was tracking the ball that he caught while still running, colliding into an HKR player in the process, catching the ball even so and then passing it out to Graham, all in one fantastic move? That was a fantastic piece of skill. Sour grapes on your part I think!

nope i wouldn't go that far.
why would i have sour grapes.
you could say that i hadn't viewed it properly.
i saw it as the HKR player dealyed a stupid amount of time and expected the ball to land in his handds. Wellens just jumped into him before he could be bothered to move and then pass it quickly.
The try was mainly due to the HKR players procrastination.
My view
