| How good did this kid look for Widnes tonight! If we are in the market for another half back next year he could be the perfect fit to partner Walsh. Not sure if he is off contract but would love to see him in the red V in 2014

| He looks to be catching back up with he's speed after that horrible injury and will develop into a quality player most people thought he would become at wigan.

| I was more impressed with Hanbury, but then the OQ issue.
He is quite a player when he puts his mind to it.

he isn't as effective in the halves and you have Lomax at fullback for awhile till the NRL or union come knocking.

| I thought Mellor was supposed to have lost all his pace with the injury that effectively finished his Wigan career? He looked alright when he picked up that loose ball.

I think Hanbury would do a great job for us as a running 6, but he signed a new deal at Widnes a couple of weeks ago.

| Hanbury and Mellor would make great signings. Mellor has some pace, reminds me of a young Longy in terms of his running game.

He has lost some of it, which shows just how quick he was. I must add that I am really pleased to see him back playing first team rugby.

I was impressed by them both. I thought they were the best players on the pitch. Mellor showed some natural rugby smarts which made me think that it's a pity Widnes got their hands on him! We could have done with a bit of that in our team, since we don't actually have any among our present squad. Hanbury is a real find at fullback.

Interesting. Sean Long's injuries early in his career probably ended up improving him as a player, as once he couldn't rely on his ridiculous speed off the mark he had to develop a more rounded and cultured game.

| Mellor badly broke his knee cap during wrestling training iirc whilst Maguire was in charge. I went to a sportsmans dinner where Maguire was the guest and he felt terrible about it.
The lad had scary pace before that injury. I remember a try he scored in an u20's Grand Final against Saints at the DW that was unbelievably good. I'm sure Lomax was at fullback for Saints that day.

Think you may be referring to this:
Reserves Grand Final 2009.
Extract from The Chair Makers report:
Wigan on the other hand with a dominant pack giving the brilliant Joe Mellor room to do what he wanted were taking the mickey. Mellor himself scored an absolutely fantastic try in which he weaved, stepped dummied and outpaced what looked like half the Saints side, before going under the sticks. When this is combined with the astute kicking and organising game which he displayed' one has to say that Wigan fans should be getting very excited.
I think a Mellor, Tomkins half back combination come 2012 is one that will rip SL teams to shreds.
Joe Mellor at half back is really fast and agile. He is slightly built like Tomkins but looks a lot faster.
