| Now the emotion has gone out of the game, I think it's apt to have a sensible discussion.
Firstly, I think Silverwood was over-reliant on it. For the Wilkin try he was right in front of it, yet still went to the VR. I would rather a ref be confident and only go to the screen when he is not in a position to see it. When it's bang in front of him, like in that situation, I really cannot see why he needs to go upstairs?!
I thought the Wardle try (think it was him) was harsh; firstly I do not think he grounded it properly and secondly I'm unsure how a player can be deemed to have scored a try when the opposition player is in possession? I know it was explained in commentary, but I think it's entirely illogical. They were saying that the Aussies have scrapped that rule, is that true? What does everyone else think of this?
Another decision that I thought was harsh was the ball steal by Wellens on Crabtree. I think that is harsh considering that Wellens HAS to try and stop the ball from being grounded, he HAS to play at the ball. Does this decision mean that defenders cannot play at the ball when the attacker is trying to put the ball on the line? I think that is a dangerous precedent really: are defenders just meant to tackle the man and not have ANY contact on the ball?
Probably sounds like sour grapes to some, but it honestly isn't, I am just wondering on future interpretations of similar circumstances.

| I said to my son " why has he gone to the video ref when he is stood right there " about the Wilkin try,i think after the farce of the magic weekend refs are just to scared to make a call now and are to quick to pass it on.
The Wardle try was a strange one and i suppose to the letter of the law it was correct,BUT myself i thought even though Turner was trying to scoop the ball up there was a point where the ball was on the ground and his hand was on the ball,to my way of thinking it should of been a drop out.
I thought Crabtree's arm was in the motion of reaching out for the line and Wello has to put his hand in there,i think it was more a lose carry than a ball steal, but maybe again thats just me.
On the night the best team won and deservedly so,but i thought there were some very inconsistent calls from the ref.

I thought the Wardle try was a no try as there was a knock on after the ball was kicked. When both players went up for the ball the ball was knocked forward by the Huddersfield player before the shamozzle of who grounded it first.

| If there hasn't been a VR then id have expected a drop out to be fair
Crabtree clearly had the ball stolen

But how do you distinguish between trying to hold the ball up and purposefully stealing the ball? It should be the ball carriers' responsibility IMO to keep hold. The defender has every right to try and hold the ball up and prevent the try.

| There is a good example of this later in the half, not in the motion of scoring, but same situation Saints on the Gaints 30m and Saints get banged for a loose carry, think it was Thompson who had the ball, was struggling to get out of the tackle. Giants have hands in the tackle and the ball pops out, loose carry given.
Exactly the same as Crabtree with his struggle to get the ball down and the ball pops out but a loose carry is not given, it was a penalty. That was pretty bad, but the Wardle try was a shocker. Firstly there is a knock on in the jump for the ball, then Percival is taken out, then Turner has the ball in his hand, there is no control from Wardle and Wellens should have been allowed to run the ball out. All pretty shocking and I would be furious if Saints showed any spark about them near the opponents line. But quite frankly the big minus is giving opposition teams major leads and turning the ball over cheaply to them.
Huddersfield needed no favours tonight but both Saints and the ref where helping bucket loads. Wilkin with another 5th tackle penalty shocker.

| I think the Wellens one was the right call as he wasn't close enough to the line when it was forced out. If a player is in the process of putting the ball down and it's forced out, it's fine as you mention as the defender isn't trying to steal it, but force it away from the line.

| Fair enough!
On a general note I don't think it was Silverwood's best performance. The ruck was a joke because he is so unwilling to police it.

| I think Silverwood had a shocker last night. Every 50/50 went the Huddersfield and even some obvious Saints penalties went to Huddersfield. Not using that as an excuse though we got massive outplayed.

I agree.
PTBs were a mess - he only gave one pen for it, but it happened a few times.
I've noticed that players this season are generally not playing on the mark either and are pushing up against the first marker. Hudds were doing this a lot last night. We should do this to give some space for Roby considering that refs do not seem concerned with it.

That's standard for Silverdud though. He's the polar opposite to James Child.

One with Walmsley too who was on his feet and had every right to play the ball, Huddersfield hands in and gives a knock on. The Thompson one lead to a try, even Cummings said it was a poor call
