Smith has nowhere near the all round ability/star quality of Leiulieu, but Wane saw that he had a massive boot and knew he could make the rest of his game work within the team. Smith's worked hard and became an integral part of a very slick operation.
Had Wigan not signed him, do you think Salford would've not signed Chase and Tim Smith (who failed at Wigan, remember)? Of course they would.
