To be fair to Saints, they probably have to sound out other players anyway. They may want to offer Sia something but they will have a number in mind that they cannot go beyond and they have to take into account that he may say no, or want out for other reasons. So they could be talking to Sia and this other player to make sure they are not left high and dry.

In the end the player has to agree to the contract. If they hold out too long they can miss out on the contract as the club has to make a move on one of them.
