Quote: SaintsFan "Well, with children to look after and a mortgage to pay if he's able to fund his own education without any help from student loans then that's good because the career of a rugby league player is very short in relation to the number of years a person has to earn a living and after being so clearly dedicated to Saints all these years, he deserves some career security for the rest of his working life. And if that also means him enjoying a few beers on us then I certainly don't resent him that. Not one bit. I hope the beer is good!'"
I don't buy this short career being the end of his working life line of argument. It is a short career, but for almost all of his 10 years he'll be on well above the average wage of £20-30k a year, why should he stop working at 30? He's basically working part time so has had plenty of time to learn and prepare himself for life when his playing career finishes (this isn't a dig at Wellens, more a general comment on sportpeople).
They have a length of time doing something they love for a very healthy renumeration, most people would love to do similar but aren't born with the talent to achieve it.
