I think it was given because he had second thoughts about not giving the one by Magennis (I think it was). Although they'd never admit it I'm sure ref's do try to put (perceived) wrong decisions right by giving one the other way.
Anyway on a slightly different point I think ref's all look for reasons to give tries far too much these days and the VR has made that worse. We frequently see "tries" where a hand brushes the ball, something that anywhere else on the field would be considered a blatant knock on but behind the line it's a try.
I'm all in favour of the VR at every game not just TV games, but they've got to do the job right.
