was a bit disappointed to be honest. Lots of the old characters missing and new ones brought in. Seemed to just rely on gore for a narrative. Hopefully will pick up soon

Don't see how, seen as Gannicus was defeated and presumed killed in battle by Pompei and Crassus. On the other hand the body of Spartacus was never found or identified and therefore he could survive and walk away after the defeat.
The makers of the show could defend that ending due to the lack of evidence that he actually did die.
