Broadchurch, Endeavor and Utopia in recent month have been way better than most of the US Sky stuff people seem obsessed with. Strange.

Also a really interesting take on the Zombie genre from BBC 3's "In the Flesh" not mentioned either.

As good as yes, better? Nah.

Hannibal, House of Lies and The Borgias knock spots off that vast majority of UK based stuff.

A lot of the US stuff is made by British companies and a lot of British actors are in most of the big shows.

Watched and enjoyed all of those you mention except Broadchurch which i missed. Suspicions of Mr Whicher is pretty good too.

I don't care where it's made - I'll give most stuff a go and judge it on merit.

I think the budgets british companies have are a lot less the our cousins over the pond although we have amazing actors eg. Hugh Laurie, Tim Roth, Damien Lewis, Andrew Lincoln, Stephen Moyer, Henry Cavill and most of the Game of Thrones cast just to name a couple. With more money going into budgets of tv shows and movies we could easily compete with the American dominance

Strange one really because the BBC is the biggest TV company in the world and second only to Sony as an entertainment/media organisation. It's bigger than SKY but obviously can't compete against a subscription system - That and the fact that it's full of over paid lefty graduates who probably don't do much - I imagine SKY isn't.

I've just seen the first episode of Broadchurch, a bit slow but seems to be setting up a decent plot.

The licence fee is just that.

The licence fee does not cover just programme making it also covers Radio, World Service and a myriad of other loss makers the BBC is obliged under it's charter to provide. Sky has none of these obligations and simply produces programmes to match it's advertising and subscription revenue.

I'd have to agree - wanton profligacy at the BBC aside, it's terrific value for money.

On the subject of Sky v BBC v movies. A very good friend of mine also happens to be a close friend of Terry Pratchett. Pratchett chose Sky to convert his books to the screen for the simple reason they allowed him to retain editorial control. He laughed the BBC out of the office and even refused an offer from Spielberg, simply because they wanted to bugger around with his books
