Its a mystery that one isn't it ?
Clearly the building of the inner ring road in the 1960s but there is nothing on there that is a familar landmark even though there is obviously a large building being constructed in the middle of the photo - I haven't a clue

Could the large building be the St James's Hospital extension. The building on the second line foreground looks like a school (Mount St Mary's?)

It may be a minority view but there is something heroic about this kind of image, an appeal in the implied certainty of what the designers were doing, and an appeal in their generation's ability to do things on a properly grand scale. In the 60s there would have been no problems throwing up a 20,000 capacity South Stand which blocked out all of the light to the damned residents on St Michael's Lane.
And back to the photo, there are the little figures, looking like men wandering home trying to work out what the hell happened to their back to backs.

Right, I was never aware of the layout of that area in those times, strange how as a young man you are often totally unaware of other parts of the city that you have no reason to visit, its was only when I started work that I found my way around parts of Leeds that I'd heard of but never visited.
Speaking of the grandoise building projects of the 60s and 70s, I started work as a trainee surveyor in 1974 working for a large electrical contractor and business was booming - you know all of those 1970s council estates that everyone looks at now and sneers at - the company I worked for worked on most of those projects, in the five years before the Thatcher came to power and shut the petty cash tin on everyone sfingers (a resonance to today ?) there were thousands if not tens of thousands of council and private houses built across our city and every city in the country, I moved to Newcastle in '77 and almost every project was a local authority build or refurbishment.
How much investment would it take to stimulate the building economy and the grander economy these days ?
Take a look back to the 1970s for the answer.

Yes thats the entry into the Leeds University Campus as you come up past the Brotherton Wing and the Martin Wing of the LGI and the buildings under construction are the then "new" University Spine Buildings as developed by the London based architects Camberlin Powell and Bonn.
The building with the tall clock tower is the old Clotherworkers Hall.

| The building in the foreground is Jerusalem Chapel, still standing but used mainly for storage now. The ring road disappearing off to the left goes under the sports centre car park, then under the hospital/university power station, then hospital Clarendon Wing. The tunnel is about to undergo extensive repairs.

I know exactly where it is now, it was on that very stretch of road when one day as I was driving right to left across the photo, a pair of truck tyres came bouncing across the carriageway like a Barnes Wallace bomb, they hit the bonnet of the van in front, flew into the air, passed over my car and then hit another one behind me - a few seconds later a cement mixer came out of the tunnel weaving from side to side having lost two wheels off its rear axle.
I had my very first car phone in the car and so tried to call the emergency services on it, how posh was that.
Unfortunately it was a Rabbit phone and we were nowhere near a reception aerial

I actually think I went to see Karate Kid 2 at the Odeon at the time of the photos. The only bit worth seeing is right at the start, as that features Martin 'sweep the leg' Kove as John Kreese, the wonderfully sneery Sensei of the Cobra Kai dojo.
Hard to believe that the little known (and little seen) Jake Speed got the Odeon 2 slot. That was the massive screen wasn't it?'"
I used to love going to the Odeon and the ABC on a weekend with my grandparents. Remember Odeon 5? I think my TV in my bedroom is bigger than that was.

Odeon 5 was a fairly late addition, when they were desperately trying to compete with Multiplexes. I saw 'Lenny: Live and Unleashed' in there, and the small cinema actually helped, giving it a more intimate feel. I think I also saw 'Madonna: Truth Or Dare' in there.

It was there for a fair few years before it closed down. I am only in my late 20's though so cant remember properly
I did see TMNT 3 in there though. I think it had been on a few weeks though by the time we went. How awesome was the big screen though. I can't remember if it was my small eyes that make it seem bigger but was it immense?

Nope, it was massive. Seeing Star Wars in there as a youngster was the most exciting thing ever!
