| Missing a couple of blatant forward passes that led to tries and giving one that probably wasn't which did';t lead to a try pales into insignificance with not sending ablett off with over 40 minutes to go for attempted gouging

| Should a referee send a player off for something he, or his other officials haven't seen?
Referees are not allowed to use the screens for reference, so should they ask the video ref if anything happened at every tackle?
I do not believe that any referees at SL level deliberately miss any incident, nor do they deliberately penalise (or not) a player or team without just cause. They make mistakes, but so do the players, and there is the disciplinary procedure to deal with anything that they miss, which this week I expect will include Mr Ablett.

As much as it pains me to defend Child, I cant see how he could have sent Ablett off when he didn't see the incident.

| Quote: batleyrhino "With regard to Child's performance, yes he got some stuff wrong, but so did every one of the players on the pitch. Rarely does a team lose because of one decision a referee gets wrong, but they frequently lose because of player mistakes.
When the players are making less mistakes than the ref, then they might have reason to be disappointed with his decisions, but under no circumstances should they question his authority either verbally or implied by body language.
There should be an official channel for the coaches of the clubs to raise issues about specific aspects of a referee's performance, but maybe this is already in place. We have precious few referee's in this country, we can't afford to lose any of them.'"
A dramatic dose of realism.

You are right, but hear in is the solution to the entire thread. I doubt any official makes a wrong decision on purpose ( notice I say doubt and not definitely ) and that they cannot give what they cannot see. A. Bit like not being able to give the forward pass for the opening try. doesn't mean the forward pass didn't happen.
As has been stated, when players do not make errors then they have reason to question the officials. In the mean time can message Sinfield and Webb please keep their mouths shut and / or the officials grow a pair and take some on field action for decent.

Well, you're not a Leeds fan. If you were a Leeds fan Sinfrield would fill you with pride, being the most succesful captain in the game's history in terms of championship trophies hoisted. But you're a Hull fan, so I can understand why you wouldn't understand.

| At the end of the game Childs had made quite a few mistakes, but the Leeds players made more so that's why we lost not because of the Referee, a different Ref could of helped the game more as a spectacle (which is frustrating that games aren't reaching their potential because of the guy in the middle) but it wouldn't of changed the result.

| All these posts about Childs not costing teams games ad it being the players faults are missing the point.
He gets so much wrong and makes so many inconsistent decisions that he stops games he is refereeing being enjoyable to watch. They becoming very frustrating games for a viewer whether a fan or a neutral.

| I know there has been some defence over the job a referee and I totally agree – it is a VERY difficult job but…
James Child is a million miles removed from the standard needed to referee a Super League game.
I know we all complain about Bentham, Ganson and Silverwood but Child is nowhere near their standard.

I know but there was a video ref at the game and a good camera angle of what happened. refs are yuite happy to go to the screen to see if a kick is a 40-20 so in these instances where an allegation has been made then for me the VR should be consulted

| James Child is an embyrionic Russell Smith. When he is awarded the really big and important games (for Leeds) we will win nothing.Look at what happened in the Russell Smith era (1 trophy ) as soon as he left for Oz we were winning left right and .Although he was soon found out in australia as a ref; now he has been demoted to a video ref and he cannot even get those decisions correct.Mark my words Child is worse IMO. But I hope I am proved wrong.

This does happen, McDermott said last year that Stuart cummins approached the coaches saying "what do you want the game to look like?" with his response bring "you should be telling us that!"

Rugby League evolved from union to create a fast flowing spectator sport. If we start interrupting the game for every alleged infringement it'll end up like American Football where a 60 minute game takes 3 hours to get through.
The incident will be referred to Red Hall and the muppets there will deal with it.
