It's just silly. I always refer to it as like blazing saddles, the Mel Brooks film.
It's very racist, but in a way that you're more laughing at the ignorance of it, rather than the people they are laughing at.
Don't get me wrong, monkey chants and slinging coins has no place.
But even though I will get shot down for it, I will always call Leeds fans yids (feel free to call me an inbred!) both are the same, it's mocking each other's culture... but neither are ACTAULLY true. To me i find it funny because of the ignorance. How can you be offended at? I'm laughing at your Jewish heritage... and 99% of you aren't Jews!
There's nothing wrong until it becomes personal (ie, directed at one person rather than a group)'"
What about the ones who are jews? Are they just supposed to ignore the fact you are using their culture and religion as an insult?

What about the Cas fans who are actually inbred?

| I don't get why you're offended by people laughing at your Jewish heritage when you aren't actually Jews though.
I just think it only turns to abuse when it becomes personal. call me an inbred Cas fan, I don't care it's part of the banter! If you want to call me an inbred but don't want to be called a Jew then sit at home and watch rugby on the telly out of harms way.
Blazing saddles. Most of what you call abuse is funny because of the ignorance. Don't take it to heart

| I don't get why they're offended? If I shout "yid" at a jew.... they'd probably just think, yes, yes I am. and carry on with their lives.
Sadly it's our culture. We aren't all gonna stand on the terraces holding hands singing Koom By Ahh (or however it's spelt)
My point is.................... Laugh at the ignorance of the anti-semetic. They gain nothing out of it in the long run anyway.

That just shows your ignorance. You try shouting that at a Jew and don't be surprised to get a smack in the mouth!

Do you? Really? You don't think that the word has come to take on insulting connotations based around notions of identity that seeks to group huge sections of society together and dehumanise them, to belittle, to justify attacks...
There is something wrong with it, whether it's directed at one person or large groups. Indeed, you could argue the latter is worse as it's attaching a single label to a whole people that ended up with 6 million of them being murdered in mid-20th century Europe.
But no, it's just a word isn't it. Absolute horse manure and that excuse represents the last resting place of the racist/anti-Semite/homophobe etc etc etc

| I dn't condone it. I just think that far too much attention is paid to it.
That Man City fan the other day will be chuffed to bits at getting himself on the telly or in the paper cause they're feral and don't care!
I'm taking it that, cause you are taking this view point, you've never called cas fans inbreds or wigan fans pies? no?

| I think the differences between Leeds and the surrounding mining towns goes back to probably the late 19th century. My late mother pre war worked in the tailoring industry in Leeds, and her work colleagues were Jew's and Lasses from the mining area's and she told me she befriended some of the jewish girls because they were citizens of Leeds, but the girls from the mining towns she found standoffish. Now I know all that works both way's,and the mining girls will also have gone home and told their own story's about Leeds people who were employed at the same tailoring factory.

Look Dave, I am probably one of the least PC people on here but I just can't agree with you on this one. Most Celtic fans are Catholics, but would you stand in a pub in Glasgow calling them fenians or taigs ? Birmingham City used to have a large black support, would you find it acceptable to call them the w**s ? Mocking a culture is totally different to mocking a religion.

| I'll tell you what makes a lie of all the wailing that newspapers and UKIP love to partake of from time to time about immigration ruining our country, our heritage, bloodstock and whatever else they find to whine on about - researching your family history.
Just as one small example of one small street in Sheepscar in 1901 - my great-grandfather owned The White Stag public house on Whitelock Street, it stood on the same site as the slightly more modern version that replaced it until very recently (now demolished), just up the road from The Eagle on Sheepscar Junction.
My great-grandfather owned the building so in terms of 1901 he would have been considered quite wealthy and the pub stood at one end of the street, a centre of the community as all pubs were in those days, he raised ten children in that pub and although I have no records of any others, to raise ten children to adulthood in a working class district like Sheepscar tells you that they weren't being brought up in absolute poverty, I'd guess that they always had food and some money for a doctor when required.
Anyway - to the point...
I noted from the 1901 census all of the other residents of the street and Its summarised here rlhttps://jerrychicken.wordpress.com/2010/10/08/rolling-back-the-years-part-two/rl first generation immigrants from what is now Poland but then Russia with Jewish surnames and in stereotypical fashion working in the textile trade, many of whom were home workers and presumably self employed, in fact nearly everyone in that street seemed to be self employed in some artisan capacity, and a complete mixed bag of races and nationalities all of whom will now be four generations down the line with those offspring cursing the importation of foreign labour.
God knows what my great-grandfathers pub tap room was like of a weekend but you can imagine that English probably wasn't the most commonly spoken language in there.

| Ultimately I think we are all descended from immigrants - just depends how far back you want to look.
My late Grandfather was a bit of an amateur genealogist and traced my family blood line back to the Saxon invasion, so I guess I'm part German. But there is also a bit of Scottish and touch of Irish and, God help me, a smidge of Welsh in the mix.
As indigenous as some may believe they are there will always be some immigrant in them somewhere down the line.
