| The vast improvement in folk spelling McClennan correctly right now is a joy to behold. I guess he's finally getting the recognition that AP knew he deserved all along.
Well done all

| Quote G1="G1"David,
I've said all along I hope McLennan/McClennan/Bluey goes on to eclipse Smith. I desperately do.
I think the guy is great. really affable. That is why I think he's judged by different standards to his predecessor which is unfair.
'"
Just to switch to AP mode for a second, Smith was the brother of a former Bradford coach who paid his own air fare over to coach Huddersfield (an appointmant that I seem to remember think was about as low as the British game could get -really would we take anyone to coach an SL side as long as was from Australia?). Then He managed to get Hudds to be "moderately average" (an achievement I know, for them) and then came to Leeds. He is less than scintillating in an interview (I remember his first appearance on Boots 'n All after his aforementioned flight to the UK - not inspiring0.
McClenonananamanlenon was an international coach who lead NZ to win the Tri-Nations. I can sort of understand why he was initially greeted with more enthusiasm than Smith by some and given more leeway early on (although there is no excuse for the crud Smith got last year from some).
Having said that, I slagged Smith off to a mate when he came over to take the Hudds job, but when Leeds appointed him coach I thought it was a shrewd appointment. The characterisitics that Hudds showed were all the things Leeds were missing - epitomised by the defeat they inflicted on us in 2003. My mate has not stopped reminding me of my initial evaluation of Smith, and I don't care, I am big enough to look at facts and change my mind.

League Express, I've just finished reading it.
I think you're right, it was time for a change. I remember saying last year, I felt he'd go with thanks and relief from me. In saying that, I felt that coaches only have a certain timespan at a club before things need freshening up and Smith had got to that point.
Oh, and loving the headline for LE - "THAT'S WHY THEY'RE CHAMPIONS!"

The sub heading is Rhinos claim back-to-back Grand Finals, so they just about get away with it.

They don't. This fella's a clever chap though. He's remained consistent.
Quote loinertillidie="Terrace Casual"Gareth privately said to me that Mcclennan was getting the team playing the best rugby he had ever seen by a Leeds team. We both agreed it was too early to judge him because why should he be judged on a handful of games? why should any coach be judged on a handful of games (that goes for Dean Lance too)?
That is the point here. It doesnt matter which coach it was, Smith OR McClennan, the simple fact is that you lambasted Smith for the same things you didn't lambast McClennan. That's double standards and has been our agenda throughout.
The fact that you're scrabbling about falling over yourself in a bid to shift the focus to others only emphasizes it further.
McClennan has done fantastic job having the team peak at the right time twice in one season but that doesnt mean to say some of the performances inbetween were top drawer also. Far from it but that doesnt matter. What matters is the result come the end of the season which was our point throughout Smiths last season when yourself and a number of others bleated and moaned for Smith to go. Some of the posts were shameful and to try to twist and turn it onto others in a bid to save face is quite frankly, pathetic.'"
It's a shame that those who now lambasted McClennan and the team this season are unable to return to the specific threads to admit how wrong they were. Not that this chap was wrong in the slightest of course. in fact he continues to be correct.

| Quote avaggdu="avaggdu"Brian McLennan got the tactics spot-on tonight. But I have to say that the Rhinos consistently seemed to played with more passion under Tony Smith.
Leeds can beat [ianyone[/i when they play to their best, but when they don't it's woeful.
Brian Mclennan has the ability to motivate the Rhinos to be even better than they were under Tony Smith, and that will come with time, I'm sure.
The one advantage ol' Cone Head has over Donk (see the movies "Cone Heads" and "Crocodile Dundee" and disagree with my nicknames if you dare!) is that he actually publicly acknowledges the achievements of his team. Tony Smith always seemed to be (and I stress "seemed") to value the achievements of the opposing side over his own team.
Privately he may have been different (and apparently was) but to a fan, he wasn't sufficiently proud of his team. Maybe this is why he got so much from the Rhinos? They were constantly trying to play to their best to seek his public approval
Leeds are a relatively young squad, so don't laugh it off. It's the young guys who play out of their skin. like Lee Smith, who make the difference in a game. The old warhorses (and they're getting younger by the day) know what they're doing and don't need the kind of ranting that Anderson subjected Saints to at half time (wise decision? with a bunch of prima donnas? Maybe not, you decide), but one thing's for sure: Brian McLennan got the tactics spot-on tonight.
Even the ol' warhorse Keef benefited from being shifted over to the right for the first half. Haven't seen him play so well for ages; he teamed-up with Ryan Hall better than I've ever seen him gel with Scott Donald since the glory days of him having the oh-so-reliable Franny Cummings on the wing. Senior needs to be part of a partnership to shine. He makes other people look good and plays better because of it. When he hasn't the support, he becomes an old man who hasn't the speed he once had, and that's a waste of an international talent. I hope Ol' Cone Head moves him to the right more often.
Burrow and Maguire have been relatively quiet of late, but if anything tonight showed (Maguire's try has to be the try of the season in my opinion) is that they are a constant threat. Yes, you can stifle them, but you do so at the detriment of the rest of your defence, and that means one of the Rhinos other stars will just pick you apart. A kick from Sinfield, a tackle-busting run from Senior, an impossible offload from Lauititi, a quick darting run from Diskin...the options are endless.
And that is why Leeds are the best team in the world - they have so many options to hurt their opposition. Their only weakness is themselves; when they allow their opposition to impose their game upon them they become rigid and mediocre. Brian McLennan knows that the best way to combat Saints (as it was with the Bulls when they were good) is to play the game in their half; you let them get near your try-line at your peril.
Tony Smith got the best out of Leeds, Brian McLennan is doing the same for the majority of the time. If he can do the same next season and improve on it, Rhinos will be unbeatable. We only need fear mercurial performances from the likes of Warrington, Catalans, Hull (both) and Saints; the rest are just plodders.
It comes down to who wants it most, and when Rhinos want it most there's no stopping them. I believe Brian McLennan can motivate Leeds to do that every game, and we have the team who are professional enough to do what they need to do, and more with style.
I believe! Do you?'" YES
