| I have four brother-in-laws, the second to youngest was a professional boxer as soon as he was old enough, made a bit of a living in the north east at the same weight as Herrol Graham but never got far enough up the ladder to fight him - after that he became a full time doorman in Whitley Bay at the time that it was THE place to be on a weekend.
Despite everyone knowing him and knowing that he was still training at the boxing gym, there was no end to the queue of pished up kids who were willing to take him on every Saturday night, never ceases to amaze me just how alcohol can remove what last brain cells some big daft lads might have left.
He also got stabbed twice while working the doors and both times never realised until the police officers who turned up to take away the pished up idiots who'd had a go, pointed it out to him - he never went on duty unless he had his stab vest on.
More fun were the nights that his youngest brother came home on leave from his RAF Military Police job and did some moonlighting with him - you would not want to take eigher of them on individually and certainly wouldn't have a go when they were both stood on the door

| Shame. I held Tessa Sanderson's Gold Medal outside that building.
And, when we (briefly) used to go down to Wembley on the day of the final, we only used to start drinking when we passed it, just so we didn't go too mad....

| I drive past it every night after picking my eldest up from work and every night she tells me what a horrible building it is and were all buildings like this in the 1960s ?
I then have to explain that this end of Leeds was the cutting edge of architecture in the late 60s what with the International Pool, the inner ring road, its tunnel, Wellington Bridge, and the YP building, but yes, with hindsight, it was all pretty ugly architecture actually.
Poulsons Pool went last year, I expect the YP building to go the same way too, after all without the front end its just a concrete warehouse that will offer nothing to a modern business.

Ritzy in the Merrion Centre seemed a huge place, ended up in top cats on the side of the Merrion Centre a few times, some interesting characters in there. Phono as was seems to be all locked up these day.'"
Planet earth brings back memories. With the revolving dance floor that was always broken and had to be "push started" by the dancers every other minute

that was still there on the one and only occasion i ventured in there, which was an ill advised move on a works night out not that many years ago, said dance floor was funny, like a playground roundabout for intoxicated adults. I [ithink[/i there was an application in to make it into a large lap dancing bar, but there were objections on the grounds of their apparently being too many establishments of that sort

| I look back in fondness on all these nightclubs and the entire ritual you just HAD to follow, smartly dressed, no trainers etc and it makes me smile. You would jump through hoops just to get in these often terrible clubs just to squeeze an extra few hours on the sauce.
Now in these days of even your local boozer (if your lucky enough to have one) is open till 1/2 o'clock in the morning its just not the same.

Very true - the choice in the 1970s was to go out earlier and be finished by 10.30pm closing or put a tie on and go to a nightclub in Leeds for a 2am finish and walk home because the buses had stopped at 11
No inbetween, no negotiation, the only variation was to drive as fast as you could to Otley were the pubs shut at 11pm - and we often did just that.

Been loving this Facebook group for the past couple of weeks since it started. Plenty of shots of Leeds from the 80's and 90's.

Yep, that's right.
A mate of mine managed the train station at the time. He said the reason Bondi closed (or atleast the final straw) was after a waste pipe from the Queens Hotel (which went through Bondi) got blocked and eventually burst, covering the place with pi$$ & , directly above this revolving dancefloor.
For those who never went in, Bondi had two floors, with the upper floor looking down onto the dancefloor (a mezzanine?). The waste pipe went through the bar itself, attached to the ceiling, so it had a good 8-10meters worth of 'splat momentum'.
