| Quote: rhinoms "The irony of you mentioning "sheer lunacy" re-printers Jjb/Menzies comparison then post that last sentence!
A good rational post and sums up my sentiments on the subject.
I don't think anyone at this stage would be against keeping a great club servant like JJB on, its just throwing 3 year deals at players of his age, and more than likely still on very good money, it seems needless when he still has this year to run yet.
The worry for me has to be that more and more of our golden period players will be handed similar longer term deals on the assumption they will just keep going at the same level. It doesn't work like that and could blow up in our faces down the line.Using the likes of Menzies as an example is no good.He is the exception to the rule, a freak one off and looked like he could even have carried on for another couple of years at the end of last year.

| JJB is one of the fittest players at the club and still a first choice forward, so a two year extention of his contract is good business. I repeat no one yet has emerged who can take his place and he will remain very good cover when this does happen. I remember a couple of seasons ago they were writing off JP as too old, too injured etc etc. He confounded that opinion and so will JJB .

| Quote: Andy Gilder "And if that "year at a time" approach leads to players moving on elsewhere and having three or four good years, you'll be the first whinging about Hetherington and McDermott mismanaging the club.
Sometimes they must wonder why they bother.'"
If that's aimed directly at me then it's bollox mate i was fully behind the departures of Senior ,Ali and barrie Mc to name just 3 if it happens that's life.
Fwiw i dont believ for 1 minute Jjb would leave anyway irrespective if had a 2/3 yr offer compared to the 1 at a time on the table from Leeds.
The year at a time approached has worked in the past plus given how our pack shapes up its time imo to start the transition whilst also playing it safe with players like Jjb.

| On JJB, if left to him he may end his career sooner than he could naturally.
In the play-off game defeat at Wigan Brian Mac confirmed that JJB was not fit to play but he wanted to so he did. So a hearty but ineffective JJB took the field and didn't appear in the 2nd half IIRC.
There has also been a couple of occasions where JP has refused to be subbed off (when the consensuses would tell us he may appreciate game breaks and fuller use of our squad)
So maybe under a stronger coach, not letting players act like the above, would see these players in better state and in better condition to add to their aging careers rather than potentially cutting them short.

| Is it not possible that JJB could have taken a reduction in salary for an extended contract to free up some space on the salary cap?

That is my take on the situation.

Whoops you beat me to it.
Apologies for the new thread on this, tho JP does merit his own thread.
However, three threads on the same subject plus this one may be slightly over-egging the pudding.

Not really. There is no comparison between Peacock and JJB. One is far more important than the other.
Again though, would Peacock have really have looked for a contract from another club for 2015? would he buggery. So again, why not just one year at a time?

| Again, maybe he's taken a paycut this year for the certainty of a two-year deal?

There is only so far he is going to go. He did the same thing two years ago, and the same thing the year before that.

| Ben Jones-Bishop, Kylie Leuluai, Kevin Sinfield, Brad Singleton and Luke Briscoe out of contact at end of the season
Ben Jones-Bishop - with the signing of Tom Briscoe, i think he could leave at the end of the season.
Kylie Leuluai - Retirement
Kevin Sinfield - will sign a contract for at least another 3 years imo
Brad Singleton - believed to have signed a new 4 year deal.
Luke Briscoe - his retention is dependent on how his loan move to Wakefield Wildcats goes.

I hope Singleton has signed long term.he ought to be the priority at this stage when long term deals are being thrown about.
On JP,at least we now know when we will lose our talisman.it gives us 2 years to find 2 top class props to go alongside Singleton.

| Good to see JP signed up again. People wrote him off after 2012, but he had a full pre-season and came back as the best prop in SL by a long way. Had he wanted to, he would have walked into the England squad ahead of Mossop.
Kylie will retire end of this season, when the likes of Ben Hannant, James Graham, Andrew Fifita and Brett White are OOC.
JP goes end of 2015, when Adam Blair, Jesse Bromwich, Luke Burgess, Brent Kite, Sam Rapira & Sam Kasiano are available.
There is a plan in place. Don't fret about it.

Not a chance we'll sign any of those names IMO
