Quote: Sal Paradise "The rules of golf are very complex and not an exact science - they are open to interpretation. You are effectively saying Woods is a cheat which I personally believe to be incorrect. He made an understandable error for which he was penalised - the 4 shots he lost at that one hole - the two for the penalty and the two because of the ball hitting the flag and going in the water cost him the win.'"

This sums it up for me. I said the same last night elsewhere.

The shot he hit that pitched full on the flag was near perfect. He would have walked off that hole at -6 and leading. Instead he had to play catch up for the rest of the tournament and he made a few errors. If I were Tiger I wouldn't be overly bothered because he did play well enough to win. I wouldn't be surprised to see him add 1 or 2 more majors to his name this year anyway.

He didn't cheat either. It was a simple mistake. If you go out of bounds, the rule is you can take a drop within 2 club lengths, no nearer the hole. When he dropped he probably had that in mind even though the circumstance wasn't the same. He was heavily penalised for that 1 shot anyway and it has cost him his 5th Green Jacket.

Quote: tvoc "The ball going in the water was an unlucky break but I guess these things occasionally happen and not just to Woods. He still carded a six after a good recovery shot and short putt played from an illegal drop.

I don't think that's what cost him in the grand scheme of things, he missed too many makeable putts and spent too much time hacking out of the trees to make a charge.

Kept thinking Westwood was going to make a putt ...... but never did.'"

It was carded as an 8 in the end.

It changed everything. I truly believe if he pitches that 3rd shot dead, as it would have been, he walks off with a 4 and coasts home. The reason he started missing putts after that and going wide was because he had to push it to get back in instead of playing smart golf, which he could have done with the lead. Even though he's looking like his old self playing wise, mentally he isn't the same. He lets everything get to him now where as in the old days he played like it never happened.

Anyway, as for the golf it's self, I was wanting Day to come home but those last 2 holes weren't kind to him over the weekend. Cabrera and Scott made what started off as a non eventful 4th round very exiting though. Scott's putt and Cabrera's 2nd on the 18th were both worthy as winning shots, and its how I love to see majors closed out. The playoff was just as exciting and they traded shot for shot. How agonisingly close was Cabrera's putt on the 10th?!! In the end though, Scott's putting won it, and to sink the pity's he did under pressure he deserved it.

Yes I know it was scored an 8 with the penalty but my point was that these things occasionally happen and not just to Woods.

He accepted he'd made a mistake and accepted the two stroke punishment - you bet he did - he probably expected to be disqualified.

What did Woods say when the 14 year-old was penalised for slow play - wasn't it along the lines of 'rules are rules' ?

(I know little about golf but do like to watch the Ryder Cup and Masters in 3D)

Edit: Cabrera's putt on the 17th (after he made birdie at 16) should have ended it - great finish in the rain.

Edit

I agree they happen, and its unfortunate, but as Sal and I said, that one shot changed everything for Woods and cost him because he had to play catch up. When you're leading, those putts he was missing go in more often than not. When you are chasing, it's amazing how often they just veer off at the last second. Either way, the 8 changed how he had to play the game. Scores never tell the whole story in golf. There's so much more that goes into how someone plays.

He didn't have to play catch up after the 15th on Friday, he had to put the unlucky break out of his mind and concentrate on the job remaining. It was a set-back but with 39 holes still to play he had plenty of opportunity to overcome the misfortune.

In my uneducated opinion he was lucky to still be in the tournament - if anything was playing on his mind I think it should have been that.

It was the 13th that proved crucial on the final day, Cabrera just found the water on his shot to the green and Scott JUST managed to avoid it. When I saw that shot avoid a swim I thought then that it might be his day.
