Quote: rodhutch "Looks like a few of the players are doing it so hopefully it is for the right reason.

Interesting that Smith only has bids of £50 while Senior is up to £112'"

I too hope that its for "the right reason".

However it is so, so easy to make your eBay item a Charity Sale with full logo's from your own choice of charity and the charity's own endorsement statement, that it makes you wonder why they haven't just ticked the box and done it - you get a free listing (usually) and your charity can usually claim Gift Aid from a UK purchaser, if any of them offer the excuse of "oh I'll just give the money to the charity" then frankly I'll find it hard to believe - tick the frikkin box and lets see those shirts raising money for the purpose they were designed for.

Just in case anyone at the club has never heard of Charitable Sales, have a read of this and do the right thing rlhttps://pages.ebay.co.uk/ebayforcharity/sell.htmlrl

Having just done a very simple search from the link on the right hand side of that page (above) I've easily found several mens health charities who are supported by eBay and several who specifically deal with prostate cancer.

Totally agree. Nobody should be selling these for profits. It does say on the listing that 'a percentage of the final sale price will go to charity' but this isn't good enough.

All the money should go to Cancer Research.

That has just been added today at 11.55 - glad to see someone at the club has a conscience after reading this.

But I agree, its still not good enough, these are player issue shirts, they will command a premium from collectors and someone within the club is selling them at that premium using the club's bank account to collect the money.

Given the original stimulus for this special edition shirt was the untimely death from cancer of one of the clubs best and most popular servants, given that the whole advertising campaign around this shirt was to promote mens health and cancer concerns specifically (or so they said) then the very least that should happen is that the whole of the proceeds should be donated to a suitable charity in the name of John Holmes rather than an individual at the club (or the club as a business) profiteering.

There is a well defined route to take on eBay so that all of us can be absolutely certain that this is happening and I've already highlighted that route - the addition of the comment on that eBay listing at 11.55 this morning simply highlights the fact that the initial listings were for personal profit only and that the main concern is still for personal profit with an undefined amount begrudgingly given to a charity.

Frankly I'm ashamed that the club I have supported since 1966 should stoop so low.

Come on Leeds Rep/Official. Come out on here and declare that all money raised from the Pink shirt sales are going to be donated to charity.

However much they raise surely they won't miss it and would do the club's reputation no harm at all donating all the proceeds.

I don't share the indignation.

The club is a commercial enterprise. Purchasers are entitled not to buy and make donations privately to any charity of their choice. The club is supporting a worthy charity and the charity will benefit from income and increased awareness, hopefully.

Why didn't you express such indignation when the club only donated $5 from each replica jersey to the charity rather than the full sale price? Isn't it the same principle?

In the John Holmes book he once auctioned a shirt for charity.

It was bought & given back to him & told not to give away something he'd worked hard to earn

So are the club making any money from the auctions?

From the rhinos site"and a percentage of money raised from sales of a limited edition replica of the shirt will go towards good causes nominated by the Holmes family"[/i

Which particular charity did the Holmes family chose? and are they registered on ebay?

Its £5 per replica shirt sold across the counter and the nominated charities are MacMillan Cancer Support and Cancer Research UK.

For the three player shirts currently fetching premium prices on eBay (plus two other items for shorts and socks) there is no indication of what the "charity donation" might be as I suspect it was added in a bit of a hurry yesterday by someone with access to here and the Leeds club eBay site, maybe there will be some clarification later ?

I'm still puzzled as to why cheques should be made payable to Leeds Rugby Union and still puzzled as to who is the main benificiary of these sales, in particular why isn't Keith Senior selling his shirt on his own eBay site, suggesting that the players will not be the benificiaries but the club (maybe even Leeds RU).

I'm also sitting here today with four t-shirts left over from our recent charity bike for the rlJoseph Salmon Trustrl, these t-shirts were provided to me free of charge by the charity to distribute to the participants and I had some spare - presumably using the same logic I can now feel free to flog these off on eBay and pocket the money for myself ?

Indeed it is, though I would expect the club to still be making a profit and so they should.

I agree that it should clarify exactly what proportion of the sales proceeds will be donated. That's just a little bit sloppy on their part. Not worth your excitement mind.

What difference does it make that the players don't benefit? Why should they? I though you only wanted the charities to benefit.

You're free to do what ever you want with them. And if you profit from having helped a very worthy cause then good for you and good for them. However, you've highlighted the major difference. I doubt anyone gave Leeds those player issue (or indeed replica) shirts free of charge. They will have been ordered, manufactured and paid for.

Just how benevolent do you expect this large commercial organisation to be?

Profit personally from goods that were produced with the sole aim of aiding bereaved parents ?

My morals are raised slightly above gutter level, from where I gaze down on yours.

But I still love you.

Quote: McLaren_Field "I think that's disgraceful, I do hope that JJB himself will not be profiting from this transaction, if he is then maybe he should use that big daft lads brain for once and think about what and who the shirt was issued for - although having said that the seller appears to be the Leeds CF & A Co (cheques made payable to Leeds RUFC Fully agree. It's a subject close to my heart and the same goes for many people I would imagine. £5 a shirt seemed a bit stingy to me on the original sales, and there's absolutely no excuse for anything other 100% of the proceeds from the ebay auctions to be going to a cancer charity IMO. It's a nice shirt, but I'm glad I didn't part with my cash for it now, I'll just donate it to a deserving charity instead.
