| Quote: El Barbudo "A bunch of us, courage boosted by being in a group of lads, went to see Chesty Morgan in "Deadly Weapons" there.
"A cinematic tour de force", "Groundbreaking drama", "A cert for the Oscars" ... were just a few of the epithets that never came its way.
Apart from us, the old cliche of it being the haunt of old men in grubby raincoats was disturbingly true, 'orrible it was.
There was another "adult" cinema in the 1970's, in City Square, known as "The Tatler Cinema Club" in part of the Queens Hotel building, it had been a cartoon cinema and, before that, a News Theatre.
It later went through a couple of incarnations as a club and I think it's a bar now.
I never went there, in any of its guises.
I am indebted to you sir, The one in the Merrion Centre was indeed an Odeon.
And the Tower was indeed in Upper Briggate as you describe, the other side of the Grand from the Plaza.
I believe that became [iMr Craig's[/i nightclub.'"
I remember the News Theatre where the whole show of many, many cartoons, interspersed with newsreels a la Bob Danvers-Walker, were repeated on an endless loop. The audience was a mixture of people who had either missed their trains and were killing time before the next one (steam of course) or those that found it cheaper to buy a ticket and sleep there all day rather than heat their own accommodation. Later in Tatler guise it did show so called adult films. (Or so I'm told you understand )
Another cinema that showed a few racy films was the Hyde Park which was aimed possibly at students.
I have fond memories of the Cottage Road where they had some double seats for 'courting couples' but which were an easy target for the older spoilsport usherettes whose bright torch beams used to cut through the smokers fog like something out of Stalg Luft 3 . Life was hard if you had a hard in those days!!

I may have hallucinated this.'"
I used to play the washboard in a band that did many gigs at the Adelphi.

| Saw man with spoons a few Saturday nights on the stage upstairs in the adelphi
Pub.about the time Ed O,Donell and his jazz band did a regular Saturday night spot. About twenty years ago (gulp) ,Ed's band was well known around the Leeds area. He was real character and nice man, he also played with some leading jazz bands when he was a bit younger.

At one point, in the late 80's it was a nightclub called "The News" (some misplaced homage to it's former days as a news reel cinema). I spent at least one night a week in there, often twice while in my late teens. It had a revolving dance floor and a DJ called Hutchie. Far too many memories from that place.

| Thanks Juan Cornetto, great news Ed is still going strong . I am seeing a few pals for a drink this Saturday night will relay the good news. A Hunslet forward called Martin Boland used to play in Ed's band from time to time, I don't think many of today's forwards have an inclination for jazz. Martin passed away several years ago, somebody told me Ed's band played at the church and gave
Him a great send off.

Yes Martin Boland indeed did play for Hunslet and he also led the White Eagles Jazz band for over 50 years and had the distinction of having the Beetles as a support band at the Cavern in Liverpool in the early 60's

I think it was PLanet Earth in the late 90s, and still had a revolving dance floor. It also did an all you can drink night for about £8, which usually ended very messily, when combined with the aforementioned revolving dancefloor

It was then Bondai Beach after that.

It was still a club at some point in the 00's, was it bondii? End up in there after a works night out.
Ritzy in the Merrion Centre seemed a huge place, ended up in top cats on the side of the Merrion Centre a few times, some interesting characters in there. Phono as was seems to be all locked up these day.

| A mate of mine who will remain nameless laid a bouncer out in TC's, well at the door actually. The poor guy was trying to keep the numbers under control and had asked us to wait a while before he let us in, which we did with some patience. However, it started to rain and my friend banged on the door to hurry him up a bit. Regrettably, the bouncer took that as a sign of aggression and came flying out of the door, presumably to remonstrate with us.
He never got the chance because he was sparked out about 3 seconds later.
What was really amusing was that my mate, carefully stepped over the poor chap, walked up to the pay desk and paid for his entry. I seem to recall that we were in there for some time before the police tipped up to escort us off the premises. However, after several cans of that strange Japanese brew supuro(spel?) I can't say my recollection on timing would be that good.
As we left, the bouncer was up and talking so, no permanent damage done, as far as I am aware! You're right about the clientelle though, they were all older than I am now and my days of night clubbing ended years ago and quite rightly too!

speaking of bouncers, we got waved into said club when we ended up in town after a rugby club black tie do, biggish lads in DJs i think they thought we were fellow bouncers, wouldn't catch me scrapping with them though, remember trying to leave the warehouse once with the mrs and the bouncers wouldn't let us because some lads were kicking off outside about not being let in, we had a birds eyes view from behind a line of bouncers as these lads goaded the bouncers, eventually they flipped and there was within about 10 seconds a collection of sparked out lads on the cobbles outside the warehouse

| I wouldn't take any of them on quite frankly, I'm not the biggest and I'm fair to poop at fighting. The lad in question was a boxer and a pretty good one at that. He didn't and, to some extent, still doesn't look much but, he is deceptively strong and quicker than a cobra on pcp. As soon as that bouncer stuck his chin forward, he didn't really have a chance!
On the side of the bouncers, I was outside Mr Craig's one evening having a chat to the big coloured guy who used to work the door (can't remember his name but, it may have been Earl). Anyway, two Geordie lands wanted to get in but, were clearly well past their best and he told them to move on. They wouldn't and then they started swinging. what happended next can only be described as mismatch and quite sickening. Still, if you go in swinging at 6ft 6" man mountain, you get what you deserve.
