And from a kick to the corner, if a player trying to catch the ball knocks it forward and another player gathers and scores, the video ref can't rule because that would be a forward pass not a knock on.

Its now crystal clear, it was a knock on from a flick pass that went backwards, yes at last I've got it!!

What I can't work out is if the video ref can without doubt say that the McGuire no try was a no-try because JJB knocked on, but he's not allowed to judge on a forward pass because its inconclusive.

Because things such as momentum (for want of a better word) don't matter for knock ons. Look at where the ball was touched, look at where it ends up - if it is in front, it's a knock on.

Different rules apply for forward passes.
