| Quote: McLaren_Field "If I remember rightly wasn't the engine of the Hillman Imp in the boot ?
A mate of mine used to drive his mothers and never knew that fact, he found out one day when he took it to a garage for them to look at a blowing exhaust, it cost him less than a pint of beer to have the whole exhaust changed, it being just eighteen inches of pipework.'"
Indeed it was (the engine in the boot)...in fact I think that car was the reason I left my job and became a medical rep - because as my much better off pal kept informing at the time - I would get a company car if I became a rep...so I moved careers.
First car as a rep? For Cotina 1.6L - I loved that car - a) because it was free, b) because it was free and err...c) because it was free
In fact it was possibly one of the worst cars ever produced and the only car to date that has led me to feeling travel sick whilst driving...Worst. Suspension. Ever!

So can I. In fact I just have.
The missus is planning a 'history of Leeds' project for her Geography and History lessons at school. It reminded me of this thread, so I spent 20 minutes looking for it, and about 3 hours reading all 85 pages, learning about Leeds and looking at all the great photos whilst reading all your childhood memories. She's enjoyed it too.
Lovely stuff. I love this City.

| Might have been mentioned before in these 85 or so pages but my dads family once owned this pub, now recently demolished...
rlhttps://www.leodis.org/display.aspx?resourceIdentifier
and the pub of the same name that once stood in its place...
rlhttps://www.leodis.org/display.aspx?resourceIdentifier
In fact there was a 50/50 chance that I might even have been born and raised a Sheepscar lad in that very pub had my grandfather not lost the chance to inherit the place on the turn of a playing card, his brother Lenny won, they held the pub for another generation and my grandfather moved a couple of miles up Meanwood Road to start a watch and clock mending business - which my father inherited for nothing, then sold to me (note how I say SOLD) and which I then lost to the recession three years ago - they'll both be spinning in their graves

nice that, flicking through those pub pics makes me feel old, not least when you see things from the late 80s which doesn't feel that long ago and everything looks so old, cars look prehistoric

| Does anybody know what the art deco builiding behind the international pool used to be? It seems to have stood empty for as long as I can remember.

The old Leeds Police HQ before it moved to Killingbeck IIRC

Almost...
Its replacement was down at the other end of The Headrow, Millgarth Police Station.
And those who have ever walked through Millgarths main doors may have wondered why you have to climb a flight of stairs to gain access to it and why the entrance should be on what is normally at least the first (or second) floor in most "normal" buildings - its because when it was designed there was a plan on the table at Leeds City Council for the whole of that bottom end of The Headrow, including the outdoor and the Edwardian indoor markets to be demolished and replaced by a huge shopping mall of a similar design to Millgarth Police Station where pedestrians would actually use elevated walkways between buildings rather than walk on pavements at ground floor level.
A similar idea was built-in to the design at The Merrion Centre too.
1960s architects eh, don't you just love them all ?

Thanks, I've often looked at it. I can't understand why it's been empty for so long. That's a great picture of it, shame it doesn't look like that now!

Would be a bit of a shame if such a key site was used for a multi storey car park, having said that the existing building isn't exactly awe inspiring either.
Which brings up another set of questions - if John Lewis are worried that their proposed huge store in the new centre won't attract enough customers because of car parking concerns then why are they getting involved in a city centre development and not sticking to out of town sites with free parking ?
Will the proposed new car park be handed over to a private developer for the likes of NCP to run and in that case how happy would you be to leave your car in a city centre NCP car park for four or five hours - or will the council pay for the car park and subsidise the rates (it which case it will be rammed full every day).
Personally I'll just do what I always do with three women in the household - drive them into Leeds, drop them off on a street somewhere to do what the hell it is that women do all day when they are "shopping" and then come back for them later.
Joe the Taxi, thats me.

Aye.
Further walkways were constructed at the other end of town near City Square.
You could walk from East Parade and over Park Row into the Bond Street centre without coming down to ground level.
You can still see a bit of walkway that was never connected to any other walkway ... it's around the otherwise lovely (*) modern smooth-granite inverted-ziggurat Bank of England building in King Street, almost opposite the Metropole hotel.
(*) I mean that, it's an example of a modern building that is aesthetically pleasing ... or would be, if it wasn't for the rough-cast concrete walkway that girdles it.
