| Chicko's made his bed. Let him lie in it.
He gave zero-s about the consequences of his decision for Leeds Rhinos, so he deserves to be at the bottom of our 'to do list' since we've sorted a replacement.
Foot note: Segeyaro literally defines as '-house' in Pacific tongue.

Such as Parcell who signed up for 3 years? Judging from the Cronulla fans responses on the issue quite a lot are praising Leeds for standing their ground and not just letting him leave. I'd imagine most players if they were on Leeds' radar and were interested in coming to the UK and playing in SL wouldn't let Segeyaro's choice of action stop them from coming.
Nothing is stopping Segeyaro from becoming an NRL player except the NRL teams (namely Cronulla) not being bothered to pay any sort of fee. Nobody is expecting the £250k or even close to it but at the moment it doesn't look like they've even offered anything. Why let somebody go for free when we can get some money for him.

| Hold out as long as possible. A message needs to be sent that this type of thing is not acceptable. It will probably get resolved and Segeyaro will get his wish in a few weeks but why should we make it easy for him?

Pretty much this though I wouldn't be too fussed if he was left to sweat for a week or two.

| I'm not a GH fan whatsoever but fwiw I think his stance is correct in we owe James no favours at all he's done us none so bo77ocks to him. Let him sweat until season starts.
One thing I do admire in GH is nobody takes the biscuit with him!

| GH is a shrewd operator and will be waiting for Cronulla to offer the same fee as the undisclosed fee we've just paid Manly for Parcell so effectively getting the new hooker for free and possibly/probably on less wages than Segeyaro as well?

| If this was someone trying to walk away mid-contract, I'd probably agree with GH, but the fact he wanted to change his mind just weeks after signing makes this a completely different scenario.
I've a lot of time for him and am one of those who thinks he gets little wrong in the grand scheme of things, but I think GH is making himself look an idiot taking this stance and so publicly. Would have been a much better message to just say 'Our club is bigger than any one player, and if James doesn't want to be here, then that's his loss and we'll let him go with our best wishes'.
I get the feeling GH is trying to use this situation to build some sort of public reputation, maybe trying to regain some credit after what has been a dismal 12 months.
Move on, we're better than this!
(P.s I still fully expect Segeyaro to be named a Cronulla player for an undisclosed fee in probably the first week of January)

From GH's point of view there probably is a bit of 'he needs a win' in terms of this issue pans out but I still think it's the right thing to do to get a fee. No reason to just let him go for free and his public statement today reminds me of last year with Ferres, we knew he wanted to come here and we let Hudds know we weren't going to be fussed if they played hardball. This year let Cronulla know they have to cough up something even if it's in the region of £50-100k.

| Can't understand why anyone thinks that Hetherington's stance on Segeyaro is wrong. We had a class player in a key position who committed himself to the club. All of a sudden, Segeyaro gets his head turned by Cronulla then makes up a pile of rubbish to try get away from the club. GH has the opportunity to fire a warning shot to any player who thinks that their contract isn't worth the paper it's written on. Hold his registration for 2 years and forget about him.

Exactly, I would understand if there was some change in circumstance that made him change his mind, but it seems like he spent his time down under feeling out whether any NRL club would want, which is especially disrespectful given we gave him extra time off to supposedly spend with his family, which he actually spent with Wade Graham and his agent.
At the very least I would expect us to get back whatever we have paid for parcell, as that is a clearly provable loss of funds as a direct result of Segeyaro breaking contract. We should have paid a massive fee for Clarke and used the same argument.
Much like Cas with Solomona, we need to remain firm, luckily for us the NRL (unlike the RFU) care about the integrity of sporting contracts.

| Either contracts are worth something or they aren't, Rhinos have a demonstrable loss so they should sue. It's business not the playground and there are consequences to actions and only getting the naughty step isn't one of them!

Spot on especially the first sentence. The person leading the way in saying it's wrong of GH is a poster who thinks GH does everything wrong and so should be taken with that in mind.
If Leeds were the club a player was holding out hoping to join and we were waiting around for him to be released and thus hoping to not have to pay any fee then he'd be the first to say how wrong it was of the Leeds club to not offer any money for a talented player.

| It would be fair enough if Segeyaro just told the truth. The fact is he didn't live alone "staring at four walls" he lived with Delaney. He signed a new deal. No way was he homesick. He goes back to Oz to be with his family, yet ends up living with Wade Graham and his agent. If he'd just admitted that Cronulla wanted him, and he wanted to go, then fair enough. It's the cock and bull story that annoys me.

| This isn't about Segeyaro or Solomona or any other individual, no matter what their reasons or motives are. It's about the value and meaning of a CONTRACT. I can't help thinking what an uproar there would be if Leeds or Castleford or any other club suddenly decided that they no longer wanted a player and simply ended his employment without compensation...

Leeds have a history here with Ryan Sheridan, Andy Hay, Karl Pratt and Darren Fleary when Powell took over. I'm not sure whether they received any compensation, but IIRC all had long term deals at the club at the time.

| I don't think GH does everything wrong but unlike some I don't think he can walk unaided on the surface of the River Aire either.
This isn't doing Leeds any good - Nobody is going to pay much for this player if anything at all so it a futile exercise - more about GH trying to deflect away attention from how he has ended up in this position in first place. Perhaps if those backing GH's stance addressed that issue then we might be to have a sensible debate as to the rights/wrongs of this.
Didn't a similar thing happen with Greg Eastwood,Toni Carroll and Danny Buderus i.e they signed longer contracts than they actually served didn't see the "a contract is a contract' in anything like the degree we are seeing here. Not seeing out a contract is a risk you take when you sign players from the NRL compare Warrington's approach to Sandow to that of GH so much more grown up.
If you don't want the issues of NRL players then produce your own - that an issue for another topic

This is not about Hetherington as many have pointed out its about abuse of contract and not allowing it to happen. Anyway, we all know Segeyaro will get his wish in the end and imo it won't hurt Leeds to just let it drift for a bit and say waiting for a fee, we hold the moral high ground on this issue as we hold the piece of paper with JS's signature next to 2 years in Leeds.

The point with this is we have now paid a transfer fee to replace a player who has broken a contract and this is costing the club money, ( as our replacement was CONTRACTED to another club ) so why shouldn't we also benefit from the supposed security of a contract.
With regards to:
Greg Eastwood as far as I recall he stated he was homesick while still playing for Leeds and asked to leave at the end of the season.
Danny Buderus asked to be released from the last year of his contract as he wanted to play his final season with Newcastle ( His Club)
Toni Carroll Wanted to go back to Aus as England based players were not going to be chosen for state of Origin games, again requested while here not sure if also smashing shoulder into barrier at the 'NEW' JJB stadium had a influence on that.
The player that would have set the precedence for this case would have been Craig Innes, but this was during the superleage war and he walked out on us before the Semi Final against Bradford
( I think ).
With regards to Warrington and Sandow, Warrington are holding his registration and therefore if he plays in the next 12 months they will receive a transfer fee exactly the same stance as GH.
We ended up in this position as a player signed a contract with us when they were no other offers out there and soon as there was strong possibility of a better one he has tried to do the dirty.
