I don't think we're that far off squad wise. With the number of out of contract players atvthe end of season, it gives us some room to add some more quality. The biggest thing for me has been how poorly coached we look. No structure in attack, shocking discipline. These are things that can be improved over the course of this year and next season. We haven't had much luck with injuries, but you tend not to when you're playing poorly and getting battered in attack and defence

This team can definitely play better than it has.
A new coach and getting players back from injury and suspension will help but we have to stop picking up stupid bans.

We also need to start playing with some structure, heart and skill.

Start of the year, the majority on here were talking up our chances of top 4 and putting in some good performances. After the Warrington game, that was still the feeling but it all came crashing down. Saints saw it when Holbrook took over and took the players to another level. A few high quality signings to replace our plodders, more structure and better coaching, and it would be a big transformation

Yeah, they were lucky to be able to get a player like him at the time. But it shows the difference a quality signing can make under the right coach. Hopefully Rohan can use the rest of this season to ID who he needs. Quality over quantity

We do look poorly coached, but injuries have messed us up yet again. The other obvious thing is that our squad was very unbalanced - not enough genuine props, just two halfbacks (Myler/Sutcliffe should be 4th or 5th choice at best) and lack of experienced cover across the field. By contrast we have 'middles' and second rows coming out of our ears, most of whom are about as average as they come.

Smith's task will get easier as the injured/suspended players return. Then its a case of weeding out the chaff and bringing in simply better players. He won't be able to revamp the entire squad in one off-season, but a real start would be to get rid of the duffers who clog up the squad and have shown time and again they are simply not good enough (or are past it). On the plus side we have a number of kids who have done a job and will be better able to cover gaps in the future.
