I remember reading somewhere the comment from a CEO (or similar) that 50% of any marketing budget was wasted but nobody knew didn't know which 50%.
The comment that all publicity is good publicity also resonates amongst all this debate.

This is most definitely not true. There are many examples of individuals and companies ruined by publicity.
