| Quote: Andy Gilder "At Widnes, Eyres had the likes of Grima and Sorensen frightening the bejesus out of opposition packs so he could do all the fancy running over half-backs stuff out in the channels.
At Leeds, they gave him Neil Harmon and Harvey Howard to protect him.
On Les Dyl, bit harsh to have your abiding memory of him being taken apart at the end of his career by a young Mal Meninga. A fine centre equally capable of scoring himself or setting tries up for his winger.'"
Isn't Les still the record Leeds try scorer? I thought he was over the 400 mark.
I agree, a bit harsh to judge him on the season he "retired" considering he made his debut for Leeds as a 16 year old and was widely thought of as the best in the world on the '74 tour .
On Richie Eyres, I thought as a youngster he was a horrible peice of work, his main weapon the late head high shot. No doubt he ran hard and was a part of that 'orrible Widnes pack but by the time he came to Leeds the game had changed around him and out and out thuggery was on the decline. I think without that edge he was much less of a player. But as we know many came to Leeds in those days with the attitude that it was a paid holiday camp, especially Dougie's ex-Widnes chums who constantly gave the impression that Leeds was a joke club and not as good as where they had come from.

David Hulme was one of the hardest working players I have seen, so some exceptions.

| My main memory of Eyres is that disgraceful elbow to Offiah’s head in the 93 cup final. He was deservedly sent off for that. Did Eyres ever get in a Test team? I don’t recall him ever managing that. I think Andy Gilder’s point that he made his name being a bully of half backs while Sorensen/Grima/O’Neill/Koloto etc did the scary stuff is correct.
David Hulme was a great professional with a great attitude, a real competitor. Another ahead of his time like Medley. Unfortunately for Leeds they got Hulme at the end of his career.

There was nothing unfortunate about Hulme as far as Leeds are concerned. It was just the team mates he played with that was unfortunate for Hulme.

| David Hulme had the privilege of playing in an eminently forgettable Leeds side. At least I do my best to forget it...

| Eyres was gash for Leeds but then so were Harvey Howard and Esene Faimalo. I remember seeing Faimalo (and others) maul us in the CC semi at Central Park in 92 and wonder at how monstrous he was.
He then came to Leeds and just looked like a big cuddly bear.
Out of that Widnes pack if I could have had one player it'd have been Kurt Sorensen. What a player.

The problem is that you never had a 70's full head of hair!

You're right, of course, buyt he was still head and shoulders above any of his Leeds team mates, was a consumate pro and single-handedly kept us up that terrible year. I've nothing but fond memories of Hulme mixed with terrible memories of everything around him.

I didn't but, then again, I'm a speccie (As Doug used to call us) and, unlike Douggie, I wasn't paid to make such decisions. Hindsight or not Doug was paid handsomely to make such decisions and he let go two of the most honest hard working professional forwards (internationals the both) and replaced them with players who played or acted like dog e.

Eyres definitely played for Great Britain, I think he also played cameo games for both England and Wales too but that could be my mind playing tricks on me

| My abiding memory of Dougie Laughton was a shot of him on BBC - must have been a cup game- in the dug-out, with a fag in one hand & the forefinger of his other hand buried up to the second knuckle up his left nostril.
I couldn't take him seriously after that.

I went off him when he banned Barry Adgie leading the team out of the dressing room.
