I think they should be separate roles, personally. The head coach job should cover team selection, leading training camps/tournament preparation and match day tactics.

The role of developing our elite players is probably the more important task, given that without it whoever the coach is we have little chance. I would argue that that role needs to be a network of people, in conjunction with the clubs and RFL, rather than an individual. It won't happen though.

With things as they are, it's hard to get too excited about who the coach is.

With a maximum of half a dozen games a year though, how do you justify that being a full-time appointment so you can pay the sort of salary that makes it attractive to the best candidates?

I couldn't justify the salary of a full time appointment anyway. Until they have the infrastructure to back them up it's pointless. I'd just go with a part-time appointment of a Super League coach at this point, until the rest of the set up is up to scratch. If you could appoint someboody with enough clout to drive the various other agendas it would be worth a full time coach. Otherwise you're just paying somebody full time to try unsuccessfully to polish the turd, when the same level of disappointment could be achieved for less money with a part timer.

I used to like the idea of a full time coach, I'm now more convinced that it's futile window dressing.

Instead of chasing forlorn dreams that a change of coach can make the national team truly competitive with the ockers any time soon lets give the gig to Schoey & Bobby and at least have a laugh.

The appointment needs to be full time if England have any ambition to maintain the gap or preferably reduce it.
