Going back to the wingers. I don't think I don't think we can underestimate the importance of the change to the corner post rule. As lethal as Makinson, Johnstone and Eden are, a large proportion of their trys wouldn't have counted a decade ago.

Medley was an excellent player but lacked "heart, application etc". Another one was Simon Haughton who could/should have been one of the best second row forwards in the world, he too lacked the aggression of say a Gareth Hock, now what a player that would have been.

He had plenty of heart and application. What he didn’t have was mongrel or consistency in defence. He tried to put the big hit in and often missed completely. We all know Reilly didn’t rate him but I think that has coloured a lot of judgement and made people think he was some sort of softy, he certainly wasn’t.

I don't know what happened with Andy hay. He is one of the best prospects I've seen at Cas. A natural loose forward who was quick enough for the three quarters, with a great attitude. He seemed to lose it, was shipped out to Sheffield, then to Leeds where he suddenly thought he was a hard man under Graham Murray. I never rated him after that. |
