I'm wondering if yo are mixing up a couple of punches there. I remember Cliff Lyons landing a beauty on Brendan Hill, but the Marty Gurr punch I remember at Odsal was on Phil Ford.
Ford had scored an 80 yard solo effort after slicing through our rubbish defence. As he rounded Gurr, he gave him a wave. Marty obviously took offence at such disrespect, and, when his chance came, smacked Ford right in the chops.

| You’re right, I am. I actually remember both games and now you mention it remember both separate incidents. Funny how there’s a correlation between the amount of grey hair you have (or no hair you have) and how your memory chooses the things it wants to give you access to at the first time of asking.

Jeez we had some dark days in 80s and 90s particularly in semis and finals and most of them seemed to happen at Central Park.'"
kevin dick wasn't bad either kicking one in 1980 yorks cup final , first leeds final i went to after visiting wembley for the hull derby www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNhuxveDPEI

Indeed. I was young. I miss being young. I was born and grew up in Leeds. I saw my first game in 1980 and went to Leeds Uni from 84-87, I lived near the ground when I was a student. I had no responsibility, my own money for the first time and I had some great mates. RL was fast and exciting and on occasion pretty brutal. I loved it.

| Just to add, I do find it a bit freeky that some of you guys on here (non of whom I know personally) went to the same matches I did 35 years ago and probably some of you were on the same Wally Arnold coaches as me and my mates. There were not that many of us back then, I could have stood next to some of you on the terraces at Leigh's $h!thole of a ground on an away day 30+ years ago.

| Quote: doc-rhino "one i remember wally arnld wise was hull kr old ground , my ad drove a few , went to widnes in about an hour in old viva when snowing in leeds think kevin squires wayne heron era and had a surprise win in the sun , did barrow away in the cup with a few crammed in a mini van smaller than transit , workington away when the pub was having a lock in during the match. I now watch matches with someone known since 2008 who started watching 1980 also but neither us remembers each other ----- the yorks cup final 1980 there seemed to be a few singing , about 10, one looked like neil hague , his brother like alan smith and 2 like cookson when he had hair (i didn't recognise him in tht with no hair ) the 2 hulls used to fill ss but i was init when kevin dick took a dive to beat hull when hesslewood was centre'"
I was at Fartown for that 1980 Yorkshire cup final, if I remember correctly HKR were unbeaten that season whereas we had barley won a league match, that was the last hurrah for that team with pitchford, Eccles Atkinson etc. John Holmes and Kevin Dick were a great pair in big games. I suppose I looked a bit like Neil Hague back then but all mates had more teeth than Alan Smith, so did my dad so probably not me.
I’d love us to get an away cup draw at barrow or the other 2 in Cumbria.
I did not go often with wally Arnold but seem to recall a guy called Roger who sat near the front and kept giving the driver directions which he clearly did not want, which just meant we kept Encouraging Roger to tell him where to go, I may be getting confused with lufc away travel in early, mid 80’s. A lot of it is quite hazy these days.
