Quote Andy Gilder="Andy Gilder"Agreed. But you also need to play the player who is going to be most effective in that position. Is an out of position Golding necessarily a better option than a "lesser" player who understands and is used to playing the position?
If we were short of half-backs, nobody would be suggesting playing Carl Ablett there ahead of Jordan Lilley, despite Ablett clearly being the more talented player of the two.'"
I agree with this. I would rather have a lesser and younger kid who knows the position playing there than a better and older player who doesn't really have the understanding or attributes to play the role well. You then shoot yourself in the foot twice - losing the player you have moved in the position he is competent in, plus carrying someone in a position they don't really know best what to do.
If the wingers in the U-19s don't understand he requirements of being a winger, then best off putting someone else there who doesn't totally either, but is a better player overall.
If the U19 wingers are really switched on with their role understanding, but are a bit naïve and need more experience - get them in.
It used to totally peck my head in the football when situations like this arose; managers would usually play a midfielder or full back in defence, that was totally clueless rather than playing a young defender who although wet behind the ears, at least had a grasp of the requirements and subtleties of being a defender.
