| With Holroyd starting for England today and Sangere on bench for France, could rest one or both next week and give Walters a start or a long spell on the field next week, chance to play himself into the side. If he’s still not selected next week it’s likely he’s not wanted.

| I fear Walters has already signed elsewhere which is a real shame

| Since he can't even speak to another team yet without permission, that seems unlikely.

| Me? Maybe. I'm realistic enough to know he may well have been talking to other clubs even though its not allowed. I'm also realistic enough to know that he, his management and whichever club he may be going to join (if any) wouldn't be dumb enough to sign a contract dated before the anti-tampering deadline expires. It is possible to pre-sign of course. But in a practical sense not possible to sign before the deadline unless Leeds gave permission. Which I doubt they would, unless he's causing trouble at the club.

Hopefully weve got something up our sleeves rather than Gawwys annual jaunt to Aus bargin-bin-a-thon at end of season.

| While we've been cheap in the past, the recent problem hasn't been the bargain bin, its the big money players who simply haven't delivered - Tetevano now looks like a reasonably good second row, and when fit Fusitu'a is a solid winger. But neither has much impact most games. Neither does Sezer, who also will be on a big wedge.
It all smacks of signing overseas players for the sake of it rather than with a plan in mind. Smith didn't have a lot of room for this year, but there are some massive decisions coming up. Get it right and with the good youngsters we have in the squad we should be set for a brighter few years. Get it wrong and we'll be back here complaining for another few years.

I get the feeling Smith isn't the type of coach to spend silly money on NR players for the sake of it, I think he's far more interesting in getting the youth through, he even mentions something of the sort in his presser today
"Sam and Liam, are guys we’d like to keep and we are working through that process to keep them."
“We feel they are players we feel can develop with our group. There’s a core of English players within our group who are growing and developing and those guys, hopefully will be part of that process moving forward.”
When quizzed further on recruitment and retention, Smith said: "Firstly, we're working through some retention, I'm a big believer you don't always have to be looking outside. We've a lot of young players developing this year and more just behind them, so some of our recruitment has already been done.
"But we'll be looking for players who can add a point of difference to what we've currently got. Some of the players off-contract have got some of their own options to explore, so it's not all in our hands."

| Interesting comments - everyone on here wants to see the youth come through but they have to be of the appropriate ability and mindset. The success of the golden generation was a blend of superb home grown players - Sinfield, Burrow, McGuire very good SL recruits like Senior, Ellis and top quality overseas such as Webb/Buderus/Ali
I don't see any of this happening under Smith at the moment. It seems to me his recruiting is players he has coached previously e.g. Hooley/Lisone/McDonald.
To his defense he has moved on some poor players and he is hamstrung to a degree with the mishandling of the cap - no doubt numerous players will be moving on this autumn.
Hopefully Smith can be encouraged to move away from experimenting with his coaching style to developing a squad that can challenge the top sides on a regular basis. The better your players the better your team - this is not rocket science.

Smith is currently hamstrung by what he inherited.
Either way, the days of players of the calibre of Webb/Buderus and Ali coming to play in SL are long gone

I would agree with both comments - as I said this is blend.
To simplify:
Do we have youngsters of sufficient quality that we can build a future strategy based around them?
Are we signing the very best British players available
Are we signing the best available players from the NRL ie those best suited to SL
On all three of those I would say there is no indication/tangible evidence that to be the case when you look at recruitment/junior development elsewhere.
This is an elite club that supporters care passionately about - not some coaching education/preparation/experiment for a future job. For me Smith needs to get his head down and deliver performances that reflect the talent/quality available - something sadly lacking this year.

I agree, however I think your expecting too much from Smith in in his first full year, it simply isn’t fixable in that timeframe.
He’s come in, cleared as much deadwood as he can whilst getting us to a GF, next year is his real test IMO

I agree - hopefully he can keep doing his learning this year with a view to implementation next season.
